Quarantine YOUR FISH!!!!!!!!!

Well, I used to be anti Quarantine. I would just always tell myself that my tank could never get infected with a parasite. I thought a Quarantine tank was just to expensive. It's funny kinda, I have spent over 1500$ on my 75 gallon tank, however I refused to spend about 50$ on a QT tank. My tank stock consisted of a tommato clown, yellow tang, coral beauty angel, and a dalmation molly. They are all dead....... : . I am now setting up 2 qt tanks and converting my FOWLR system to a fish only system. In the event that my main tank still get infected, I can treat the whole tank without the worry of hurting my live rock.

Some times we just gotta learn the hard way...

Wow, that's horrible! I'm going to have to think about getting a QT for my tanks! O.O

Oh no! I am so sorry you had to go through that! I, too, thought that a Q tank was silly....But now I wouldn't be without it, good for new fish, and also for any sick fish. Something not to be without.

Sorry you've had so many problems. However, I'd recommend keeping the live rock rather than going with a fish only system. It seems that your tank would be a lot more stable relying on a natural method of bio filtration (the LR) rather than regular filter media. IMO that's going to be a whole lot less surface area for beneficial organisms to live on in your tank. Of course, this is JMO. Again, sorry for the losses.

Hello Trey,
Sorry to hear about your fish loss. Many of us have been there with you and learned the hard way.
Best wishes on the new set up.

I know what you mean. While my losses weren't nearly as severe I lost a my two prize swordtails, all because I didn't have one set up yet. I do now. and thankfully the other two are about ready to return the main tank.

Sorry about your fish loss. I use as qt tank a plastic container from walmart and a small filter with a heater and worked great many times. Is easy to medicate since the volume is low is cheap on the meds too. Good Luck.

yeah that was part of the problem when they took ill just after I set up my daughters 10 gal which would have been perfect, and I had to use all my stuff to finish it off. Then about a week later they took ill, and so I tried everything but the qt. After running through one set of meds, and them showing improvement, I figured that the cost of meds to totally rehab them in my 55 gal was going to be more than setting up a whole new tank for them.

So now I have 13.5 gal in my garage, that I will use for experimenting with after they are out.

Yeah that sucks! Sorry for your loss....i just went through the same thing except i saved 1 percula, my foxface and a damsel. i lost my mated mandrins, a clown goby, and a powder brown tang. QT's are a definite must have item if you plan on being successful in keeping fish. I would have saved them all if i had a QT already setup. I had to wait to have it up and running after i found out i had sick fish. It can happen to anyone

There's a great thread on the forum for a "Quick and Dirty QT setup" that uses a rubber-maid tub rather then an aquarium it works great and is easy to set up and down.

Yea, my plans are to get a big plastic tub and have a spare sponge filter run in one of my tanks for instant QT when needed! (I had this idea after also losing some fish).
I'm sorry for your losses, but I can totally agree with you.
