need seafood cooking expert

I consider myself a pretty good cook. But I know nothing of cooking seafood. Nada. So I need a little advice for a recipe.

It's a seafood bisque. There's shrimp and crab in it. But the recipe calls for the crappy canned crab meat...which is already cooked... right? See I have no idea.

I didn't want that crab meat, so I picked up one of the most expensive jars of refrigerated lump crab meat.

The shrimp is supposed to be put in raw, then simmered in this bisque for about 12 or 13 minutes or so. Will the crab meat I put in get done in that time too?

I can cook pretty good PA dutch style food I think, but the seafood is new to me!

*On a side note I feel pretty guilty making a seafood cooking post in a fish forum.

The crab meat will already be cooked and ready to eat all's you need to do is heat it which it will do whilst cooking with the other ingriediants

Also the shrimp(prawn) should already be cooked

Even if it wasn't cooked it would cook in the same time as the shrimp. but you are ok...crabs need to be cooked before they could pick the meat.

The shrimp is raw, actually.

Cool beans, thanks much both of you. I should have figured that... the movie "Cast Away" comes to mind... I forgot all about that.

*edited to add* Let me just smack myself on the forehead. I just took a look at the container and it even says right on it that it's already cooked. I'd say I feel pretty stupid but I don't because the lady at the seafood counter told me it wasn't. Doh!

I would season the shrimp and add raw. If you add them already cooked and leave them in the bisque for an additional 15 minutes, they will toughen up. Shrimp when added to boiling liquid cook in a matter of minutes.

Good Luck
