Large tank noob - have a 27gal

Hi all,

I have the opportunity to get a full setup rectangular 150gal in excellent shape including canister filters, overflows, protein skimmer, pumps, lights, for a steal. There is currently nothing in the tank, the owner needs the space.

I have a 27gal hex that I've been keeping for a number of years now. I made the mistake of letting my wife pick out the fish (hi hi) and we ended up with a single tiger barb, a dempsey-like Cichlid, and a big Jack Dempsey. Surprisingly they get along. I know its not the best arrangement, but nothing is dying and they have been ok for a year or so. With the latest possible aquisition I'd like to put the JD in that big tank with the other cichlid, and put a few more barb friends in the hex.

Are there any pitfalls or big "gotchas" involved with owning a tank that potentially weighs 3/4 ton? I know that my weekly 1/3 water changes will go up exponentially in effort.

I'd make the hex a cool FW community tank!!! I'd get some angels and other things. Suprisingly, my angles do not bother the fish I have in there as they should. I have 2 angels in with 4 mollies, a dwarf gourami and a pleco. They all get along great. Just depends on the fish and size of tank.

You could do a species-only tiger barb tank in the 27. That would be really awesome. Just be careful not to overcrowd them, as they are already aggressive fish.

I think your new tank sounds great - I have to admit to being a bit jealous. A cichlid tank seems like the way to go, but I can't help with stocking ideas. There are a lot of people here with cool cichlid tanks, so I think you'll get plenty of help.

As far as the size of the tank, I know that you have to make sure that your floor and stand will be able to handle the weight and pressure. For more help on this, I would retitle the thread to something like: "Help: Support for 150g tank" so the right people will see the thread.

*subdues jealousy*

A suggestion, for a tank that size you might want to consider investing in a python to simplify your water changes otherwise you'll be spending the entire day changing water! Of course if you DID decide to do your water changes with something like a 5 gallon bucket, you could save some money by canceling your gym membership since you'll be getting one heck of a workout.
