| Well, I quit dipping tobacco. None of you know this, however since the start of this year I have been pretty hooked on snuff/dip. It started at my job, as I was starting to get real tired and depressed from working long hours. My friend at work kept telling me I should start to dip because of the rush it gives. Because I am 16 years old I can not legally purchase tobacco in my state. With that said, I asked my friend to purchase some for me. My first dipping experience ended with me swallowing the spit and throwing up . I then learned that I should spit the dip. Anyway, I started really getting hooked on the stuff, I constantly dipped at work and at home hoping my parents or boss would not fine out. My friends at work thought I was cool for dipping, I was one of the guys now! I loved dipping so much that I thought people that refused to dip were dumb, I was wrong. Well, last night I was cleaning my fish tanks while i was dipping. Needless to say, trying to start a syphon with a wad of tobacco in your mouth and trying not to swallow it is a challenge . After cleaning my tanks I was laying in my bed thinking. I was thinking loggically for once. I asked myself, is it worth it? Is it worth the risk of mouth cancer? Tooth loss? Death? I then realized that dipping tobacco was not cool. So, I took my can if grizzly mint long cut, went outside and walked into the street. Looking down that long road reminded me of the road of life. Although at one moment everything can be fine, you can be in a wreck in a split second out of nowere. Dipping was leading me to a wreck. So, I wound up the pitch and threw that can of dip down the road. I also spat out my wad right were I was. This is for the best...

| Congratulations! I personally think dipping tobacco is a very disgusting habit. I've refused to date men because they dipped.
Good for you for quitting! I'm sure you'd feel horrible if you accidentally got some of that nasty stuff in your tank. |

| I agree with everyone above! Living a few miles from the old private home of R J Reynolds (in case you didn't know, he used to dominate the tobacco industry) and I believe his main factory, we have plenty of smokers and users of other tobacco products. We have so much anti-tobacco education here I understand that it is really hard to quit using the stuff. I think it is responsible and admirable to be able to quit a habit like that, and congrats on your accomplishment!
EDIT: Just checked, RJR is the second largest tobacco company in the world, and it is based in my city! Think how many people here have jobs in RJR, and how likely those people are to use tobacco! Last edited by rae64; February 2nd, 2010 at 10:14 AM.

| Congratulations. Much better to quit now than to try to quit in five, ten, or twenty years.
I know numerous men and women like bolivianbaby who won't date tobacco users for several reasons, from the gross factor to not wanting to be with someone who is pretty much guaranteed to die ten or more years early. |

I smoke cigarettes (looking to quit this year) and I'll date smokers, I just won't date them if they dip. |

I think this establishes a tentative hierarchy:
in terms of tobacco use, not using it is the least gross,
smoking is more gross than not using, but less gross than chewing
chewing is more gross than smoking |

| Good call Trey
I've never been a smoker nor ever had much of an interest in trying it. We recently had a (i believe) provincial campaign were school age kids voted on the add that would be most likely to either stop them from smoking or keep them from starting...
It's pretty gruesome or else I'd try finding a link on youtube.
You definetly made the right choice. |

| I love the COPE!
yeah I dipped in HS, and while in basic in the army then when I work nights every now and then because we are locked inside all night, It is what it is, they all taste like poop, cigarettes all taste like dirt, some a minty dirt but dirt.
I quit for a year and a half and am smoking cigs again but have gone from 1.5 packs a day to .5 and quitting by valentines day I hope.
It is good that you quit but the risk of mouth cancer and throat cancer are nearly comparable to a non chewer.
Congrats on the quitting and not killing the fish that night. |

| Seems like everyone in the military either smokes or dips....i'm around it way to much for my tastes. Kinda used to it now, but never felt the urge to do it, thankfully.
I'm just addicted to other unhealthy things. MTS, Discus, the smell of Prime, freeze dried blackworms, world of warcraft, driving to fast, etc.
Congrats on quitting. |

| Good for you for quitting!!!!! I quit smoking like....idk, 6 months ago?
That's the big difference between smoking and dipping/chewing - Smoking destroys your insides, which no one sees. Dipping/chewing destroys your mouth, which everyone sees. It's hard to hide the fact that half your tongue had to be removed, as well as portions of your lips. |

| Good for you Trey! Nicotene is an insidious drug that is very difficult to get out of your life once you allow it in. I quit smoking cigarettes nearly a year ago now and still occasionally have a battle. I've had a couple in the last few days due to an emotional upheaval, and I know this is a very dangerous time...must stay strong! You've done yourself an enormous favour by quitting now, and not allowing it to get it's claws into you. Congrats! |

| Good job quitting so soon!
I smoke like a chimney...been seriously trying to figure out how to quit. Can't seem to stop buying packs though, and then of course I have to finish the pack...ah. Hoping to try that Chantix prescription once my health insurance kicks in though. |

I have a co-worker who's wife got a prescription for a different quit smoking aid and had no problems. I'll find out the name of it and PM you with it. |

| To ALL of you who wish you could stop - you CAN!!! It's a matter of really really wanting to. Don't doubt yourself, and don't beat yourself up if you falter. Just pick up where you left off. It IS doable, no matter how hard. And just a tip - if you keep telling yourself it's gonna be hard, then it will be. I have a friend who was a heavy smoker for years, and convinced himself quitting was going to be easy. And guess what? He did it easy. I'm an addict, and I'm very familiar with all the things we do to justify or enable our habit. Sorry guys, but they're all excuses. If you want to do it, just do it.
....should I duck for cover now? |

....should I duck for cover now? | I agree 100%. I smoked for 8 years and my girlfriend smoked for twice that, and we both quit. We used the "just stop smoking" method - no gum, no patches. You have to WANT to do it, and most people simply don't want to.
One thing we both did was quit in the middle of our packs. If you feel you need to finish the pack, then you're just not ready to quit.
The excuses cigarette smokers use to justfy why they can't quit are the same excuses alcoholics use. |

Better to quit now while you are young, instead of waiting till you have done it for years.
I smoked for 40 years, and just quit ( again ) in October. It's not real easy, but it can be done !!!
Best of luck, and congratulations...
