Welcome to fishlore!!!
This has nothing to do with moving, but there are some under-lying issues we need to address first.
To begin, your your tank is overstocked. Unfortunately, most pet stores don't tell people that 3 fantail
goldfish need a tank of 40 gallons, and depending on your pleco, maybe more. If he is a common pleco, he will reach sizes of over 1 foot, much too large for your 10 gallon tank. If I were you, I would take all 4 fish back to the pet store. We can work on getting your tank cycled (get to this next) without any fish, and then choose some fish that will be happy in the 10 gallon tank for their entire life.
Next, aquarium information says you know nothing about then
nitrogen cycle. <--- click the blue letters to read about it. This is the bacteria 1309mw is talking about.
A quickie explaination is this:
Fish waste and decaying things produce ammonia, a chemical that is toxic to fish. There is a special bacteria that consumes this ammonia and turns it into
nitrite, which is also toxic to fish. Next, another, new bacteria consumes the nitrite and converts it to
nitrate. Nitrate is not very toxic to fish, but is harmful in large quantities. Weekly water changes will help keep the nitrate levels down.
If you do take your fish back to the store, you should look into fishless cycling.
Four Methods of Fish Less Cycling This is where you use other ammonia sources to feed the bactera besides fish, so when you do get your fish they do not have to suffer the ammonia. This method is more humane and faster. But, you need to be able to monitor these levels. This can be done with test kits. Most people here on this forum use
API master test kits. They are a little expensive but last for years, and are very reliable. During the cycle you should see a spike in the ammonia, then a rise in nitrites. Both will fall and your readings will have nitrates, and your tank will soon be cycled. As soon as your readings are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, and some nitrate, you are safe to add some fish.
Just a side note... seeing as your tank has been set up over a year, you are possible already cycled. But, this does not make your aquarium safe for your fish, as it is too small for them. First I would get a
test kit and get your readings. If it turns out you are cycled, you do not have to wait before you return the goldies and pleco and get some better suited fish.
Hope this helps, and welcome welcome welcome!!!
