Shipping Shrimp

How do you ship live cherry shrimp? Just out of curiosity.

I got some shipped to me and they were in a small breather bag with bunch of hair algae or something like that

Thanks. Can shrimp survive for 3 days in a breather bag in transit?

The younger the specimens the highest survival rate. Adult specimens, for some reason, are more vulnerable to the stress imposed by shipping.

I guess the breather bag would work but I figure that if you manage to get as much water and compressed air into a bag to which you previously added some java moss, water from their tank, and the shrimps, you are ready to send them over.

There is a "thermal device" that keeps the package warm during transit (it's like a pad that looks like those used to absorb humidity but bigger). i have no idea how it's called but UPS/FedEx should know.

For detailed info on how another person did this check this 2008 thread in AquariaCentral:

Most definitely. I had a shipment from Ohio to Utah get lost in the Post for 9 days. They still arrived safe & sound. I've also received shrimp from Europe and it typically takes 12 to 14 days in the Post.

If they are packaged properly, they travel very well.

I generally receive my shrimp in a styrofoam-lined box, with a heat pack if it's winter, held in a breather bag with a clump of any type of plant for the shrimp to cling to. Three days is fine. If the weather isn't horrible, they can last much longer.
