Yesterday I was reading a tread about being stuck at home and not being able to test for ammonia do to a lack of a test kit. That got me thinking is there anyway to do a test for ammonia with out a kit? So off to Google I went in search of an answer. Unfortunately I was not able to find one, but I did find this:

But no one ever responded after that post, and I have yet to find an answer. So I was wondering if anyone here might know what it is/was, or a simple way to test for ammonia in an emergency?

Well, here's a rather 'iffy' method. Ammonia is alkali, so if absolutely nothing else in your tank is raising the pH then it could be ammonia.

I have no idea in practice whether it;ll work at all. Its not a very good test.

Now if you could get it to come out from the water and turn into gas, then its much easier to test for.
