Inherited a tank and what a surprise ( disgusting)

Good morning Fishlore members,

So this weekend was a very interesting weekend for me. Over the weekend i inherited a 10 gal tank with two kissing gouramis but that is not the fun part. The interesting part is that the owner of this tank never cleaned or conditioned the water for the fishes. The tank setup belonged to my sister BF which as shown in the pictures he had no clue on how to take care of fishes. The water quality was soo bad in the tank that you could hardly see anything inside as the water was extremely brown, honestly i don't know how the fishes survived this long. There was sooo much gunk and what not in the bottom and all over the tank that i had to do get in there and scrub. The aftermath looked sooo great compared to how i received the tank that the kissing gouramis are now happy swimming all over the place.

here are some pics

When i received the tank: (The water looked worse in person than in the pic)

Soo much build up in the filter canister

Just seeing this filter got me sick

I forgot to turn over the heater but it had alot of nasty build up stuck to it

After a couple hours cleaning out everything and removing building up from fish equipment, i was happy with all the results. Hopefully im able to get these fishes to great health once again.

They're beautiful fish, but really need a bigger home. Congrats on the rescue though!

Kissing Gouramis are air breathers. Their native waters are pretty disgusting places, not crystal clear like we keep our aquariums. Thus the ability to breath air. Hot dirty water doesn't hold much O2.

But regardless it's a good save.

wow, never knew their native waters were of such terrible conditions.

I guess this guy had these fishes since they were very small.

But thanks everyone, im glad to see a cleaner scenario than they had. I will be working in rehoming them to something bigger.
