Rehoming a fish...

Ok so this is something that I'm in the process of attempting and I was wondering what you guys think of the topic.

Typically the ways to re-home a fish is to return it to the LFS, private "sale" and trading/giving to other hobbyists. Which to you prefer? Why? What considerations do you make?

In my area it's -30*C outside, since I don't have a car that would require waiting for the bus. Right now I think that would be too much stress for a fish on top of sending it to a pet-store (though I don't actually know if any around here do that...). I've put the poor guy up on Kijiji, gave a blurb about why I'm getting rid of him and on Tiger Barbs in general. Had one response asking how much. I told him 1.50-2.00 and asked what kind of set up they have... I guess I get to wait now to see how that goes.

What have you guys done?

I usally give it to my local fish club. But, If no one wants the particicular fish I ask around the pet stores in my area. The considerations i make are will they take the fish and sell it to someone who walks in saying i want fish. Or will they make sure it gets a proper setup with the right info on the fish.

Hope that helps

I had a bijillion guppies in all sizes/ages and I listed on craigslist. Sorted through the responses for a cycled tank/knowledgeable fish keeper. I gave them away but I felt they were going to a good home. I was happy to make more room in my tank so it was a win win situation. I am sure if you offer it for free, you will get a different response. I guess it depends on how bad you want it gone. Good Luck

I usually give them away on Craigslist...I don't really care about the money, I just filter through the responses to find someone that sounds reasonably knowledgeable. I post the tank, tankmates, and water requirements for them. I work at a fish store, and I hate bringing them back...I'd hate to see them dead in the morning or have some dimwit buy the ones that have been in my tanks.

I rehomed my danios by giving them to a lfs I trust. They put them into a planted tank with no other fish, and told me they wouldn't sell them, but would give them to someone who'd provide an appropriate home.
