Heavy duty industrial rack to hold several aquariums

I'm moving at the end of february, probably to a smaller house. I am NOT looking forward to moving all the tanks and fish - it'll probably take 2 days. Naturally, I want to keep all of my tanks running, so I would like to get an industrial shelf that is capable of holding more than 1000 lbs per shelf, with 3 or 4 shelves.

So far my only idea is to go the the paint store. I figure a gallon of paint weighs more than a gallon of water, so if it can hold the same number of gallons of paint as I want it to hold of water, I should be in the clear.

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Wow, good luck first of all! I would agree with the paint/water theory. This will prob be the easiest way to find out if a shelf will be suitable rather than calculating things (I prefer the hands on trial and error approach too, I don't get on well with numbers for a start!).
I really wish you all the best with this, moving is a big pain at the best of times without 19 tanks to deal with. Let us know how it goes, esp with the shelf idea, I'd love to hear how you get on

Lowes & Home Depot have industrial shelving around here. It's certainly not inexpensive though.

If you're handy, you can build tanks racks using 2x4's fairly easily. I got my ideas from surfing - lots of articles on the web.

Best of luck with the move!

Thanks for the responses. what i was thinking of doing was using the 2x4s to bolster the rack and i would be able to paint it and make it look nice.

i have never built anything like that, so im a little concerned about trusting it to hold a few hundred gallons. am i worrying too much.

on a side note, im picking up another 55 today

Jaysee, I don't know if you or anyone you know has a welder and can use it, but if so, I recommend steel.. Take's the worry out of things, and you can still paint it.

I've built several racks/stands for myself and friends, all from steel, and with a little planning and preparation you can make them quite nice.

Provided the floor your putting them on can take the weight.

Make sure the floor can support all the weight too. Having all the smaller tanks spread out is one thing, but putting them all on one central shelving unit puts all your weight in one area. Good Luck otherwise

Very good point. I will have to wait and see what kind of house I'll be moving to.

I am no welder, but I have a friend who might be able to pull a favor($) and have someone do it.

Wood would work fine too, Just make sure you come up with a design that is structurally sound. Lots of braces and gussets.. And the bigger the base, the better the weight load is distributed..

Like I said before, I prefer steel, simply because it takes the guess work out of everything. And I personally prefer welding over screws/nails/glue, but that being said, I have pretty much a full out fab-shop in my backyard..

If you need any help with the design side of things, don't be shy!

I'd have went with steel too, but don't have the tools.

Here's a pic of one of my 10 gallon tank racks...

Click the image to open in full size.

It's built to hold 24 ten gallon tanks... the floor is concrete

Made from 2x4's, MDF & carriage bolts.

holy moly! That's going to be quite a moving project, Jaysee. Are you going to have a fish room at the new place? I know you've mentioned you are going smaller...

Thanks. I've got 15 places lined up to look at sunday and monday. There's a place that is right on the beach, as in the first house with sand dunes for a yard. She REALLYwants it even though we haven't even been inside yet. That would be nice
