Hello,

I went out to my LFS yesterday to peek at new fish and wish I had room, lol! I always enjoy conversation with the owner and his staff member. Anyway, his staff member, Crystal told me what happend the other day about a women coming in and wanting a fish tank. So, Crystal explained to her the nitrogen cycle etc. until she was blue in the face......the women wasn't very happy about it and left because she WANTED a tank and fish asap! Well, the sneaky lady came back later after bein explained that you can't just set up a tank, throw fish in and everybody is happy AND Crystal wasn't around when she came back. The owners daughter sold the lady a 10 gallon tank and 4 bags of fish!!! Crystal was pretty upset.....then she's telling me she gives up telling people about the whole tank process cause' they don't listen and people don't care eather if you till them how big each fish gets or if it's mean, they still want it. Oh, then they come back and wonder why all their fish died, she gets that one alot too.

Anyway, just thought that was a story to share with you fish people, that my LFS cares alot but then there is so much they can do.

Sad but you know, people do it on this website (anywhere and for any topic)....they ask for advice but already know what they want and will do what they want anyway.

I'm glad your LFS cares too! Before I moved the lfs would just sell you fish left to right and doesn't even care. I really disliked that place, there was only one dude that actually knows what he's doing. I'm glad he's there but he will also sell you stuff left to right which I didn't like. They sold me dead plants (I was a noobie then) thinking that the plant was actually reddish brown... UGHH I can't believe they are still open after many years.

I do agree there might be some people who do that but not everyone. There are some who like to be educated in order to become responsible fish owners. And for those people, this forum is a blessing.

That's so sad.
If I were the owner, I'd tell people that fish losses are not covered if the buyer chooses to ignore such sound advice.

i know that feeling alllll to well... i sold fish for 7 years and tried to explain it to customers and my employees.. no one got it.. some customers appreciated it though and thanked me later when they were happy that their fish lasted more then a day lol. that was a great feeling. i would not sell fish to customers if i felt as though they would feed say a fancy tail goldfish to another fish. "your refusing me a sale?" "yes .. yes i am.. these fish are not ment for feeding for your selfish disgusting needs" it was great too cause my boss stuck up for me. that kid felt like a idiot. i tried my best but i couldnt control what happened when i wasnt there. i miss my tanks dearly. but i would never go back to work for that comany for all the money in the world

No harm done, I just had the feeling you're a little dissapointed and wanted to reasure you that us, newbies, are trully greatful and fortunate there are places such as this one where we can learn so much about fish care. Sadly, people who don't want to learn cannot be taught, hence the story the OP posted. That doesn't mean we should give up trying

I wish I had such caring LFS here too... Thanks for sharing. I wish they would just have rules and laws for this kind of situation.

Early signs? Ive got another 10 and 20 ready to go. this place is totally enabling as well as a learning experience. I learn something new each time I come on this site, whether or not i remember it all is another story.

Yup, I agree. I gave advice to someone who inherited a huge freshwater tank....knows nothing.....I told him what he needed to do, well he didn't listen. I even did two water changes, to show him. He keeps loosen fish, yet he buys more and I told him to take back some of the fish he has because it's overstocked. He doesn't get it. Just does what he wants. The nitrAtes are off the charts!!! It's sad. Yet he wonders why he's loosin fish, but just replaces them. Crystal, that's the gal at my lfs, has had it with him too, pretty much just stopped tryin to explain it like I did.
