having a crazy moment here - I think my fish is telepathic

So this is gonna sound weird but I swear my chalceus knew my gold gourami was dying (my husband thinks I'm absolutely insane!) I had moved the gold gourami to a hospital tank a couple of days earlier when I noticed some black sores on her that seemed to appear over night - catching her in the 150 gal was a bit stressful and moving to a 10 gal wasn't much better - the poor thing died 2 days later. The night she died the chalceus went a little crazy - started splashing around and smacking the side of the tank. The chalceus tends to be skittish anyway but he's calmed down alot in the past year and only seems to have an "episode" when something is wrong (Once he went flippy when the filter wasn't working correctly)
Do you think it's possible he knew even though they were in separate tanks in different corners of the house - heck I'm probably just crazy!

Maybe he felt that way are because you have removed the gold gourami and knowing that a tank mate has vanished from the tank made him worried? lol

I'm hesitant to say I definately think he knew, but it wouldnt surprise me either. Let's face it, the whole universe operates on energy, and animals have constantly proved that they are way more connected to that universal energy than we are. So why not?

My cat definitely knows when I'm really upset because she comes to comfort me. I imagine all different kinds of animals are able to sense emotion and maybe he misses her or maybe he senses you being upset. I wouldn't say that's impossible. Like Scatty, I say there's too many unknowns in the universe and so many things we discover in science and such that I would be hesitant to rule out such a thing.

I'm sorry you lost your little girl and that your other fishy seems upset.

Good morning AECW. I don't think you're crazy in the least. I believe that fish know more than many people give them credit for. The Gourami that passed could have been a buddy to the chalceus. I lost a Bloody Parrot a while back. He was elderly and just lost all control of his ability to swim. All of the other Bloody Parrots knew something was wrong and tried to help him. It was really sad and yet so comforting to see his buddies there with him during his last few hours. They would nudge him and get right beside him and try to help him swim and to keep him from falling over.
hmmm maybe we're both crazy? lol NOT
Thanks for sharing your story with us.

There has been cases proved that animals know, feel, hear, and see first than humans. They can tell when something is about to happen before it happened. I haven't experienced or seen it before but I had a friend who saw some animals panicking and acting weird before the south east asia 'tsunami' hit the coasts. So animals are actually connected to nature.

So about your fish, he could have a better instinct or is more connected to what could happen before it happens than all your other fish. Not really telepathy. Hope this helps

Thanx for all the input - my whole family thinks it's kinda funny but the chalceus is an interesting fish - he definitely surprises me daily - I don't know if anyone else is familiar with this type of fish but they tend to hover real still at the top of the tank and stare you down - then make a go for whatever appendage you have just stuck in the tank - this particular fish (his name is Dirty Harry) did seem to protect the gourami alot - it just was the weirdest coincident that he freaked out at the exact time the poor little gourami passed . But....I've always thought our pets were smarter than us or at least in this house they are
