Sticking Cakes Together

Odd title, I know. It's a bit of an odd subject.

My dearest boyfriend is going away to university on the 27th, and I'm making him a cake.

An odd cake, it's going to be a cookie base, then a sponge cake, then cookie, then sponge.

WHAT DO I USE TO STICK IT TOGETHER!

He doesn't like jam or cream. And neither do I.

I can make a darn fine fudge icing (Melted sugar and butter mixed in with icing sugar and coco powder)

But I don't want to use that three times over.

Any ideas?

Thank you FL

ABC...I love cake! I asked Chef what you could do and he suggested to go ahead and use the fudge frosting or you could actually use pudding. He also suggested that you could use a pie filling.
Nice of you to do this for your boy friend.

Oooh thank you I might do the fudge icing, but without the coco powder in it

Thanks for the suggestion

One of my daughters doesn't like jam or cream so often we use melted chocolate and butter and a dash of water to make a topping/filling and she can just about manage lemon curd at a push.
For birthdays we have a huge pile of brownies with candles pushed into them (straight from Nigella) at all different heights which she loves.

You could use a vanilla pudding to compliment your fudge icing. What kind of cookies are you using?

Does he like peanut butter? slightly melt peanut butter and chocolate chips use that as "glue" to stick them together Or use peanut butter & jelly then cover all with chocolate frosting

there is a really cool icing we use a lot, you brown butter add a little milk and thicken it with powdered sugar, it tastes like caramel kinda.

I'm making cookies, (it's a pain because when I say cookie, I mean UK cookies, not biscuits and it's all very confusing) I'm making two giant soft choccy chip ones

Oh I love soft chocolate chip cookies! My youngest son always got a huge homemade soft chocolate chip cookie for his B'day If he wanted it frosted I covered with choco/mint chips when the cookie was hot then spread when it melted.
How about pic when you get it made

Also a little hint. With that many layers and weight after you have it all put together with the fillings and before putting the end frosting on it I would stick a couple of dowels (2 or3)all the way down into it to help hold it toghther. You may find without them your layers might start sliding off. I have had that happen.

You can use bamboo skewers if you aren't going to put anything on top of the cake...They will help to keep the layers from sliding around. Just remember where they are in the cake and take them out when the cake is cut...
