| There's something alive down there... So I'm not a rodent person, so I'm not really happy with things right now. THere is a samll furry creature in my basement. It's not a mouse more of a vole or shrew type creature. Apparently they can't be caught with mouse traps so I'm now sitting down here with a net hoping to catch the little rotter. He's kinda cute, maybe I should keep him as a pet in the cracked ten gal of mine |

| Well at least you're being productive and trying to catch him instead of standing on a chair and screaming at the top of your lungs hoping someone hears you |

| Maybe he's a weasel or a stoat of some kind. I love teeny little fuzzy friends, provided they aren't rabid, LOL!
Good luck with catching the little guy, hope he's friendly! |

| Oh my gosh Red. I would not be brave enough to even be in the same house. Let alone down in the basement with it with a net..ROFL..I just couldn't do it, but I'm sooo proud of you for doing it... I can't even handle spiders. I called Jeff the other day because their was a HUGE spider crawling across the floor..He said and I quote. "Cescha, I'm at work, it's a spider your a human, your bigger, figure it out". I was furious at first..lol..I hung up on him and called my grandma..LOL..
SOOOO good luck with it Red. I'm cheering for ya! |

mom and dad won't let the house cat back in because he likes to irritate mom when she sleeps and jump on the counters and eat off dad's plate.
However I managed to catch him with a folgers coffee can. He's definatly a shew-type creature of some kind. He doesn't see very well I think (hence why I could get the coffee can over top of him.) I've got the lid on it now and don't know what to do with him. I kinda wanna keep him but at the same time I have never ever had a pet rodant before. |

| Slightly better pics here.
There's a handful of old aquarium sand left in the ten gal, will that hurt him or can I just leave it for now? The aquarium has been sitting outside for over two months so I'm pretty sure that there's nothing harmful left in the sand. Last edited by Red1313; July 30th, 2009 at 01:00 PM.

| Until you know what it is, it'll be hard to care for it properly. (Without a better pic, I wouldn't want to guess.) Maybe you could contact fish and wildlife (or the Canadian equivalent? I'm not sure if they're called something different up your way) to help you ID him, and to determine if it is legal to keep at home, and/or how to care for it. Another option might be local Audobon societies, or similar wildlife groups. Either group could at least tell you what the next step would be. |

| Carol has the best suggestion.
When I want to ID some thing I take it to the local state park. The rangers/naturalist can usually tell me what it is and we release it there. (providing it's not an invasive species) |
