32 Gallon Craig's List Deal

I'm probably gonna buy a bigger aquarium because my dad started liking them and want a bigger one in the living room.

I'm thinking of buying this:http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/for/1233235623.html
It's a Waterhome 32 and I think it's a great deal seeing that it's completely brand new and has never been used.

Here's what's in the kit: http://www.hagen.com/canada/english/...01132500010101

I have a Waterhome 10 and I really like it so I think I'll like this one as well.

What do you guys think?

I would change the bulbs to power-glo they offer better light and probably the heater is a preset so if you get any ICH or some parasite that you can get rid off by raising the temp in this case you can't. Other than that good price.

The heater is this one and it says it has an adjustable dial. Why would it say preset?

Edit: Woops forgot to add a link to the heater. silly me. http://www.hagen.com/canada/english/...01007140011001

Edit:I also have a question. Do canopies with 2 lights allow you to turn one off and the other on?

Hmm... It's an ok deal. You could pick-up a new 55 gallon at Wal-Mart for 115$ with a better filter, heater, etc.

The equipment that comes with the Walmart kit tanks is nowhere near the quality of that Aquaclear equipment. That said, the filter that comes with the 32 gallon, although it is a great filter, is undersized for the tank IMO. I'd run the AC 70 on it instead. Of course, that's no problem if you pick up a small HOB filter to use along with the AC 50. I do think the price is high, but if that's a good deal for your area then that's the way it is. I'm lucky to live in an area where Craigslist deals are pretty good for aquariums sometimes, but I've lived in places where you can't get squat on CL as far as good deals on aquariums.

I can't find any info on their site about the light that is included in the kit. It seems to be a twin tube fixture, which would give you enough light for low light plants if you're interested in that. I doubt that you'll be able to control the bulbs independently; my old twin tube fixture had only one switch. There are fixtures that allow you to do that, but you'd have to upgrade to power compact or HO T5 for that, which would be a big added expense.

As far as bulbs for the fixture, that's just a matter of preference. If you're wanting a planted tank, look for bulbs in the 6700K - 10000K range. If not, just use whatever appeals to you. The wattage is going to be the same on any bulb that fits in there, and it won't make much difference.

Since your dad is interested in a bigger tank it might be a good idea to team up to find the best deal around. Why I bet if you put your heads together with a little patience you will find a deal that will knock your socks off. Imagine a 50, 80, or even 100 gallon that comes with all the stuff you need. Just keep check craiglist every few days and I guarantee you, you will find something allot bigger.

Well I wish I can get a 100 gallon aquarium but I don't have much space and I have to pay everything for the aquarium and I don't have a job or anything. I'm even worried right now that I might not be able to buy enough gravel.

I like so many others buy their sand and even gravel at the local hardware store. It usually looks more natural because it hasn't been painted but does require allot more rinsing before use. Anyway construction brown sand or white silica sand cost about $7-$9 for 90 pounds or you can get landscape river gravel or stone for $3 for 20 pounds. This is much cheaper then paying $20 a small bag at the LFS. As far as aquarium room or footprint, I always try and find 32" tall tanks which take allot less room, an 77 gallon takes up about the same room as a 30 gallon as it is only 36" long.
