| | Fish Keeper | Photo Help! I'm wanting to enter a photo contest in which one of the rules is "No digitally altered images". Now I'm wondering what counts as a digitally altered image. If I use Picasa 3 and sharpen an image, or put more lighting in it, or blur the background, etc., does that mean I've digitally altered it? Or does digitally altered only mean something like you do on Photoshop where you can give a monkey a tiger's head or something like that?
Anyone know? Would sharpened, lightened, etc. images be allowed? Is there a ddifference between digitally inhancing and digitally altering? |

| | Fish Master | I think altering an image in any way counts. Because it's not real anymore, it's been touched up. |

| | Fish Keeper | they're probably using the press rules, which are very strict. Only cropping and exposure correction are allowed.
anything else; adjusting colors (white balance is considered "exposure correction"), contrast beyond that of correcting exposure, sharpening, blurring, adding/removing content and so on are prohibited. many photojournalists have lost their jobs about this. It's a big deal and those rules are well established. You'll be fine if you go with that.
Amanda: That's an odd thing to say when any digital image is completely fake. The camera does so much processing that what you see looks almost nothing like the "actual" image. As such, it IS acceptable to correct where the camera incorrectly processed an image (white balance, for instance). But it's not acceptable to go beyond that. | | Fish Keeper | In the photography club i am in, this is the rule clarifying touched up to altered pics. Quote:
Edits which you could easily do on film and which don't significantly alter the contents of the photo
is allowable (Cropping, brightness, contrast, levels, curves, B&W Conversion etc)
| I know everyone is different but its a guide i generally go by.

| | Fish Master | Why don't you just contact the head of the photo contest? That would be the easiest clarification. |
