I'm hearing a nasty rumor from a pet store that I hope you all can shed some light on. He said he could order SafeStart and then two weeks later came back and told me the following:

I'm being told that Tetra is going out of business and that Easybalance has replaced SafeStart. However, on their website, Easybalance is not listed as having nitrifying bacteria.

Is this gentleman (I use the term loosely) trying to pull one over on me so I buy something from him since he can't get the SafeStart or is he giving me correct information?

Any input or knowledge is greatly appreciated.

I'm being totally serious.

He ordered it and then called me and told me that the Easybalance replaced the SafeStart and that he'd ordered it and the order came in.

How should I handle it? He's left me a voicemail message (he was supposed to call me when he got in the SafeStart).

in this economy, it wouldn't surprise me. Many companies are merging or being bought out. Not saying that the rumor is true, but just wondering why would a guy would go thru all that trouble just to sell....... a $5.00 item ? ?

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

But in the meantime, bolivianbaby, you should see if you can order the SafeStart online , if that's the product you really want.

Do you have to do business with this fish store again? If not, I would for sure call them on it, not just the employee but his boss as well. Actually, even if you do have to do business with them I would call them on it. What a turd.

another pet store in the next town to ours, said that aquasafe was the same thing as safestart..that was the manager..when I imformed him it wasnt, he was surprised (or showed surprise) so maybe the guy/gal truely didnt know ..either way id definitely tell them that you contacted tetra (give them a call yourself) and that information is false

I don't have to do business with this store again (thank goodness). He said he could get the SafeStart, that's the only reason I was doing business with him at all. I would never buy an animal from him because I don't like how he keeps them.

What's worse-he's the actual owner. I found this out when he was telling me he could get the SafeStart.

I'll look into the Tetra dealers. I was just going to keep some on hand in case of a mini cycle. My 20 gallon and one of my 29's have already cycled. My second 29 gallon just finished cycling yesterday, and my 5 gallon betta tank just started showing ammonia today after two weeks with none, so I don't have to get the SafeStart immediately (thank goodness).

Thanks to everyone for your good advice and knowledge. It's crazy how dishonest people can be.

Bolivian: My experience is to call before you go to a store that is listed as a dealer. I've gotten screwed a couple times, goign to a store listed as a dealer and them not having the product or even knowing what the product is.

Thanks everyone. I'll definitely call first. Sometimes they hire teenagers who don't know API from Seachem, so that's a good idea.

Just tell him that isn't the product you want. He can't insist you buy it just because he ordered it.
If he is just the owner and not really into fish he may not know the difference. You would be surprised at the people who don't know anything about the products they sell.

+1...Or care! I think he's just trying to make a sale and doesn't care if it's what you want or what's good for your situation whatsoever...If you don't need to go back there, I'd leave it at that, or call him back to tell him you wanted the TSS so you won't be buying the easybalance. It sounds to me like he's trying to swindle you.
