Warning Rant Ahead

I am so angry!
My daughter has been looking for a car on Craig's List.
Twice in the past two weeks she's had a car sold out from under her.

What's the matter with people? They know you're coming over to test drive.
When we got there, both times people have sold the car.
Why can't they space test drivers out?
At least tell us someone else is looking at the car and call us if its still available or sold!!

Have some integrity people!

Argggggggg. Ok, carry on with your fish duties. lol
Thanks for listening.

awww Lucy.... that really is a shame! Your daughter must have had her heart set on getting a car. Loosing that chance twice is very disheartening and frustrating for sure.
Folks on Craiglist or other ads really want to sell their items to the first person that comes along with the money asap.. Its a shame they couldnt have at least given you a call before you drove over there out of consideration, but some folks just dont care.

Thank Kate, she was super dissappointed.
I guess looking on the other side of the coin, they can't be sure we're honest and are on our way over.

Most people are only out for themselves without consideration of others.

Hi Lucy,
it really is a two way street, considering that these sellers dont know the buyer and vice versa. Once these transactions are made, they will never hear from the other party again. Its nothing personal Im sure, it just sounds like its a first come first serve kind of deal. I totally agree with being bummed out tho, and may have asked the seller to please call IF the item was sold before I had a chance to get to it, and save every one a lot of time. I would hope that at least a seller could do that out of consideration.
On another note... for all you know, Fate got in the way and saved your daughter from buying a lemon. Have to try and look at the bright side of things.

That's what I told her. When it's the right car, it'll happen.
In the mean time, we'll keep looking.

Grrrrr. I totally understand and would be sooooo frustrated too. It would have been a kind gessure on there part to call and told you it was sold. Don't worry the right car will come around for you daughter. I hope you didn't have to drive to far.

Happy car hunting.

Lucy, I'm sorry this has happened to you twice now. I have had that happen a few times on craigslist. The seller would tell me that I could come and pick it up at a certain time. Then when I was on my way over, they would send me an email saying that its sold. I think that its only fair to tell you if someone else is coming to look at it earlier and that its first come first serve. The least they could have done is called you and let you know that it was sold before you made the trip over there. I know how dissapointed your daughter must feel. I remember shopping around for my first car, and getting so discouraged. I finally found a car that I fell in love with though and it was so worth the wait. It was an old car, but it had so much character and I was so glad that I hadn't gotten any of those cars that didn't end up working out.

not true. Most people are out to be fair. That means selling the car when a buyer has money in hand. A prospective buyer could drag their feet for weeks and that's not fair to the seller.

I've done it, but I told the other buyers that other people were interested. Then I called back when I sold it, I didn't wait for them to show up at the door. Sheesh.

I've had that happen to my dad before. He's mega into his cars, and had set off on his merry way 200 miles away to pick up a vintage mini (He'd found it on eBay.)

When he arrived, the guy had sold it a few minutes earlier.

I fully understand your anger. The car in question was supposed to be my first car!

(I can't drive for another year but that's just not the point!)

The right car will come along eventually, "The car chooses the owner" And all that

She'll find the right one

That's true, but I think that the biggest problem with humanity is that we don't expect the best of each other. When posting something on Craigslist or Freecycle, I give priority to the earliest replies, unless there is someone who can pick an item up much sooner (in which case I let the earlier replies know that the item is gone). I know that about 50% of these people just aren't going to show up, but I'm going to give them a chance to show me that they're part of the better half. In other words, I'm going to trust them until they give me a reason not to.
