That's a good question, but I've never seen any solar powered stuff for aquariums at my LFS's intact the only place that might have some would be somewhere online. You should try to find a site.

Hello. I've never heard of anything solar powered for aquariums either. Would be interesting to find out though.

Nope but now ya got me thinking.....put some panels on an eastern window...hook up some leads which will go somewhere cause that's as far as I can think in terms of science...would need a source to store the power..then to turn that power into electricity...ok I quit now

You won't be able to (easily) retrofit a solar collector to existing aquarium equipment. AC is integral to the design of the motors and lights and they will not operate on the DC output of a solar panel. To do so you'd need a LOT of solar panels to make enough power, a battery bank (sun doesn't shine at night) and an inverter (to convert DC to AC). It would cost hundreds of dollars just to save pennies on electricity. Not worth it.

Now there are some items that might be cost effective to replace. LED lamps operate on DC and are super efficient. It might even lend a neat effect as the lights brighten and dim as the sun moves across the sky.

The most cost effective option would be to make a solar powered heater. It's not hard to convert heat into...heat. You'd need a thermostat, a pump (any pump, you'll power it off mains), and a bit of piping to make the collector. not too bad. I bet you could save $100 in electricity every year if you did it right.

I'd keep the standard heater in there too, just in case it's a dark day.

Solar powered stuff is great and it is making the world more Eco-Friendly instead of having to use so much electricity on so many things making out bills go up.

Although when I first read your post, I was a little surprised on why you would want to have solar powered equipment for your aquarium. You would have to put your solar powered filter or lights near a window where the sun would shine. Although that wouldn't be possible either. It is best you keep to having your lights and filter and heater run on electricity. I doubt that anyone would create any solar powered aquarium equipment. It's nearly impossible.

You don't have to give up though, if you keep on searching through out the world wide web... you will find something that is going to be useful. Although I do like your ideas of solar powered equipment. I myself have a bunch of solar powered lights that I put in my back yard and they illuminate at night. I have some around my pond that is connected to a stream where wild fishes can swim in and out of the pond. So it just houses any fish that swim into the pond and at night, the lights do shine around it and the reflection of the light on the pond is just beautiful

Sorry, I digressed a little.

Don't give up!
