Canopy's

Good morning! I'm still gathering information concerning a new tank. I've decided on a glass 240 gallon 96x24x24 (no built in over flow) and I'm wondering about canopy's. How much of the viewing area (if any) is blocked by adding a canopy. Easy access into the tank? Are there two entries into the tank from the top? Thanks in advance.
oh 1 more: I assume the back of the canopy is open (that will be against the wall) so is there room for HOB's should I decide to have one as a spare?

good morning Aquarist
I was under the impression that the canopy's had an open top, like a box without a cover, just the four corners. It would sit on the edge of the tank, but you would still have access to your hood, lights etc. It just keeps all those things hidden from sight. Unless your standing on a foot stool or a step ladder. Im sure there are many styles that differ, but that is what I thought they were pretty much about.
Do you have the glass tank top? I have that on my 125 and love it, so much more than the dark tank cover and bulky hood/lights like my other tanks have.
Congrats on the new tank btw!

Thanks CapeKate. Yes, it will have glass tops. I love the glass tops as well. I have them on my 155 now. I can be up stairs and look down on the tank and it's awesome. Thanks for the tips. Since this is going to be a big investment for me I might as well go all out and get the canopy as well.
Right now I'm buying odds and ends for the new tank. Getting all my filter media together and getting it ready to put inside my 155g running now. By the time I get the 240g I should be all set. I'll transfer "everything" over from the 155 and then I'll only have to add about 100g's of fresh water. The 155 is going to be packed with filter media for the new tank. Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I won't have to deal with cycling issues. However, I am prepared for issues as well. I have 2 55g drums for emergency tank problems.

It all sounds great Aquarist! Those BRs getting too big? I know mine are starting to make my 125 look small hehee...
Good luck with it, and keep as much filter media you can in your other tank to soak up all the good BB. I did that and put a bunch in the new canister and in 24 hrs my 125 was cycled.
Im sure you will do just fine with it...

lol Yes, the BR's are getting huge. My largest is 8.5 x 6 and would venture to guess he weighs at least 12oz. if not more. Not only will a larger tank help with my MTS but I'll feel better knowing that I'm doing all I can to keep my fish family happy and healthy. When I'm done with the filtration I'll be pumping 2000 to 2400 GPH and all with seeded media. I'll have to put the fish in right away but I won't have any new additions for at least a few weeks.

Thats what I did ... I moved my guys from the 55 to the 125. Unfortunately I already had fish to go into the 55 so couldnt go out and stock that tank.
Its always so much fun to add new stock to the tank.. have fun with that!

All sounding very good. Looking forward to your new venture! I don't have much experience with canopies other than I built several simple ones over the years for customers. From memory they only overlapped the glass by two to three inches. I personally like the bottom of the cover to sit below the waterline. It's probably how they are all designed anyway.
Can you get them 'off the shelf', or do you have to have it specially built?

Thanks Life! I'm going to order it all from my LFS. From some of the sites I've been on the 96x24x24 (240gph) is fairly common so I wouldn't say that it's custom built. They gave me a great price on it. Too, by ordering from my LFS, should something go wrong with the tank structure I have someone to (explative) complain to If I order it on line and have it shipped to my home and something goes wrong, not a pretty picture The difference in price is well worth my sanity
