I just bought a auqa filter on ebay. It hummed for 1 minute now nothing. any suggestions?

When you say 'hum' do you mean it made noise then stopped making the noise, or worked for a minute then turned off.
If it just turned off you could try cleaning it, un-plugging and re-plugging it in, raising the water level...
Or since you bought it used, it might just be broken...

I have 2 of those. They do it because they are sucking up water to start themselves at first (make sure you pour in some water to start with to give the filter a boost). After about a minute water will start pouring out of the end hanging over the tank and the noise will stop.

In other words, it's normal.

is it still working or did it stop working? if it's working then it was just "priming" itself (getting all of the air out), if it's not working then it's not a self priming filter and you need to unplug it, plug it back in, and pour water in until the humming stops.

Is that the aqua-tech from walmart? I have 2 of them. Along with the other suggestions, is the impeller is in place?
Does it move freely (can you spin it) when it's not attached to your filter?
