Tis the season

I know allot of states get hit hard with storms and tornado this time of year and Kansas is NOOO exception. Right now we are in our 5th or 6th tornado warning this year.. My lights are flickering right now so I'm sure we'll lose power here shortly. My hubby is a power Lineman so he won't be home on time..lol...Geez...Spring, gotta love it except if you live in tornado alley.

I hope you all get through it okay!
We have only had 2 warnings this year. But we are in east tn, so we get the smaller guys.

The smaller the better..lol..
In 2007 a F-5 hit a town 30 min away from us and took the whole town down. I was on maternity leave at the time..Grace was 4 weeks old. I was on the Disaster team for our Lab and got called in..It was the most horriable thing I'd ever seen in my entire life. Just awful..Ever since then tornado's kinda freak me out. I love the medical field but when your working with victims that have been through this its just awful.. I'll never forget it.

We have had only four days so far in May that it hasn't rained. There's always a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning. Tornado alley i understand that
Stay safe cesch.

We have been having some pretty lovely weather here too!! Gotta love the Spring/Early Summer in GA and apparently other places too. If it keeps on here I think we are gonna be swimming soon. Stay safe everyone.

I live in North Texas so I definitely know how you feel! I love storms, though. They make great for new episodes of Storm Chasers on Discovery!

I never thought my weather would be "nice"...but it has! it's been 1:3 rain vs. sunny days and no storms, just straight downpours. Very nice indeed!

I'm honestly surprised you folks in tornado alley haven't started building your houses like bunkers: thick stonework walls (or concrete) and rounded structures to deflect the wind and debris.

Beside being "tornado proof", that structure would improve the thermal characteristics of the home and reduce heating/cooling costs!

that's totally how I would do it.

Many of the homes here have storm shelters under ground

In Kansas it's rare to have a house without a basement. I'd say 90-95% of homes have basements. We've not had too bad of weather so far and I'm hoping it continues that way. I hope it does for everyone else too.

We don't have many basements here because of water seepage.

ohhh yeah..that wouldn't be good at all...Basements are in general damp and prone to water problems I'm sure it would be bad if you lived in a wet area. Storm shelter work too, I'm just super afraid of them..lol..I had to go into one when my sister lived at the farm...TOOO SCARY...But I'd rather be down there then up in the air.

Here is a video about Greensburg Kansas. It's about 30 min from us. This is the tornado I talked about in post #3. For those of you who don't know what a tornado is like this will give you a good idea. This tornado took out an entire town in 5 min.

My home sure doesn't have a storm shelter or a basement. We had a real close encounter with a tornado just last year. It managed to tear up a local restaurant pretty badly, though.
