| blame it on the weather Well, I took this week off work - I needed a break, and I have SO been wanting to plant my flowers! Spring comes late to this neck of the woods. And now the weather's not cooperating whatsoever - a cold front moved through here in the last 24 hours or so, and caused the barometric pressure to drop 3-4 kPa in that time frame (= psi ?) and the temp to drop ten degrees C. So of course as per usual I end up with a freakish migraine, that nothing will help. I took some extra strength acetominophen with caffeine, strongest stuff you can get here w/o a prescription (I'm allergic to ibuprofen and aspirin does nothing for me), and ignored it and went about my day - semi-successfully. It made me grumpy all day today (I was already grumpy cause I took time off and don't get to plant flowers - it's gonna SNOW all this week and next!) It was sort of gone, I was all happy again...but I was just off to sleep, and the noise of the filters on the 3 tanks in my bedroom, which normally doesn't bug me at all (actually lulls me to sleep) started to make my head split again. So...great time to go play on FishLore! (in my nice quiet extra bedroom/office).
Anyone else get migraines when the weather changes? |

| Usually the unpredictability of it is one of the things I love about Calgary...but I took a week off work! and it's gonna SNOW!
Ok done whining...snow is pretty!
(yes but I love sunshine... ...and flowers... )
What do you do to get rid of your migraine? cold packs and hot packs don't help, swearing at it is making me feel a teeny bit better though... |

| I usually don't get them bad enough to where it effects my everyday living abilities. Sometimes I do, and then I take excedrin and try to sleep it off. My mom gets them REALLY bad, and she has to be in a dark room with no lights or sounds until it goes away. She also has perscription meds for it though. |

| Yeah, I'm like your mom in this way then. There are days when going to work and looking at a computer all day just isn't possible. I had a Rx med, cost $75/pill though, no thanks if I'm not dying. This one's not quite that bad though, it'll be gone by morning I'm sure.
One of my coworkers bought herself a bunch of tulips and put them on her desk. Said she was sick of waiting for Mother Nature to get going on spring! |

| Oh so sorry for you migraines. I get them sometimes and ewww I feel your pain. You know they have some really good preventatives out for them now. I do medical transcription and type about it all the time and my daughter takes topamax to help prevent hers. Oh and a side effect of topamax is weight loss....now how horrible is that...LOL tickles Megan to death. |

| hmm, that's a side effect I could definitely live with The last time someone prescribed me a preventative for migraines the 'side effect' was a constant, low-grade headache - no thanks!
I don't really think I get them often enough to warrant taking a preventative really, I'm pretty big on avoiding meds if I can (my entire family is on some sort of pill and I'm not - for now...) It will be gone tomorrow. It better be gone tomorrow! |

I moved here two years ago, that was the hardest thing to get used to is how late spring is - I should have been planting flowers in March for crying out loud! aaggghhh!
Flip side - it stays pretty warm til mid-January.... |

| wow that's extreme - ok I'm fine! I've been hospitalized for them before, but strokes --? yeesh! I understand about the 'day is shot' though - that's exactly what it's like. Lately my tactic is 'pretend it isn't happening. Mind over matter - if you don't mind, it doesn't matter!' Works to a degree, then you're standing in line at Walmart and everything starts waving...just for a bit though... |

I hear you on the mind over matter idea. I did try it but when I walked into the door (had an aura catch me by surprise) it dented the idea very quickly I tell ya, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. |

(yes, this has happened and I have the scars to show for it) |

| Good morning. I get migraines to the point I have lie down, lights off and no noise (as someone mentioned above). I use to take a prescription called Maxault and it was great but insurance will not pay for it any longer. ($400 for 18 pills). So now I take a valium and sleep it off. |

| Good morning aquarist. Maxalt is wonderful stuff, it's worked very well for me in the past, but it's $75/pill here and my insurance also doesn't pay for it...nope not for me.
This morning, headache is completely gone! (helps that the weather improved a bunch - barometric pressure rose, sun is shining ) |

| I started getting migraines 20 years ago when I was 18. I don’t have auras. But I puke (sorry gross) and puke and puke. The pain is excruciating. Sound doesn’t bother me too much but I absolutely hate the sun, or any kind of light when I’m sick. I yawn constantly the whole time and my eyes tear like crazy. Sometimes it’s just one eye. (My left eye has been trying to claw it’s way out of my head for years lol)
The thing about migraines is no one takes you seriously. It’s not just a regular headache. It’s impossible for me to do anything when it gets really bad. The worst part is that this seems normal to my kids because they’ve grown up seeing their mom like this. There were times when my kids were little when it was all I could do to get the phone dialed and mutter to my own mother “I’m sick” so she could come and feed my kids.
My grandma and great grandma got them till menopause so I guess I’m stuck with them.
I had an MRI MRA in my early 20s but they didn’t find anything. I was on Verapamil (sp) to prevent the headaches for years back then but I still got them so I quit taking it. About six months ago my doctor prescribed 12.5 mg Axert that I take when I get a headache. Luckily it’s covered by the insurance. I can take one and them another after a half hour if the first hasn’t helped. It constricts the blood vessels. It has been pretty good at stopping the pain most times but there are still few days a month when I’m getting sick so much that I can’t keep the medicine down long enough to do any good. Sometimes if my husband rubs my shoulders neck or head it will calm me down and help take the edge off the pain but usually I’m writhing around so much that even that doesn’t help.
Wow that was a lot of whining lol. Hey whining can be fun sometimes though. |

It involves squeezing and rubbing in a circular motion the Tragus of the ear. My nephew told me that his friend used to suffer migraines like I do for years and about six months ago she was told about this method. From what I understand it is some form of shiatsu. I like that stuff and acupuncture. | No idea where the 'tragus' is...but I do know that if I rub my ears (the part where they attach to my head lol) I feel ever so much better |

| Wow, you're ear huh? I'll give it a try, can't hurt. I'm also going to start taking calcium like you mentioned in your earlier post. I have some because my doctor wanted me to take it for my bones (getting older ugh) but was just too lazy to take it.
A stroke is scary to say the least. I'm glad you aren't suffering to many long term effects from it. The speech problems sound bad enough. If you don't mind me asking, was your stroke caused by the headaches or related to them somehow? I hope that's not a really stupid question. I saw recently somewhere that migrainers that have auras are at a greater risk for strokes. |

exactly!

I'll try it but I may need an extra hand. I'm usually busy pushing on the veins on my left temple. It's a two handed job.
Edit: Why is my reply in the middle of the quote? sheesh I gotta learn to use this forum some day lol |

| Fishkeeping is such an amazing stress reliever, isn't it? I've said often in the last six months or so that I never knew how much I needed a hobby like this until I got it Now if I'm feeling overwhelmed or frazzled I sit on my sofa (which gives me a panoramic view of most of my tanks) and watch my fin babies play for an hour or so. A purring cat on my lap doesn't hurt either. Nothing equals it for me - cut down on the stress-related part of the migraines too...now if I could just control the weather... |

I may get more stressed thinking of all the aquarium related stuff I have on my to do list. You’re giving me the feeling I should maybe make another appointment with the neurologist. Maybe get checked out before I have a more serious problem.
They say a stroke will feel like “the worst headache of your life” which makes me think… OK worst headache of who’s life? Theirs or mine
The fact that you had less headaches in the military than you did after is interesting. Maybe you had a more regular exercise or sleep schedule? |

| Yeah I definitely had more exercise when I was in the military but not sleep.
I was a more relaxed person in there as I didn't have any worries. My life was more defined whereas civi life has more chaos in it - and that chaos contributed more so to my stress and my migraines.
If I could go back to military life I would do so in a split second, without any hesitation and certainly without any regret. My wife doesn't take that too kindly. But sacrifices have to made and I'll live with my decisions. As long as she is happy then I'm happy. |
