Well now that my son is getting ready to turn 4 and healthy as a horse, my husband was reading the newspaper yesterday and there was a story about a DR that was being sued, multimillion dollar-wise.

Well, when Carson was a baby he had a lot of stomach issues, and breathing trouble. For 5 months he was in the hospital 15 times (the first 5 months of his life). A number of times for pnemonia caused by untreated reflux and issues with allergies to milk and soy.

The stomach doctor we had was a jerk, he wouldn't ever look further to help my son. Finally the lung doctor had him admitted for surgery to band his stomach. During that hospital stay the lung doctor first did a lung scope to see what was going on. He came out and said "fire the stomach doctor, hes not doing his job" I threw a FIT to say the least and instead of waiting on the nurses to go through the chain of command I called another drs office (stomach specialist) to see my son, and had the origianl DOC banned from seeinmg my child.

The new doc came in with a great personality, and TON of knowledge (he is a med director of ped gi at 3 major hospitals). He changed his milk to a soy and dairy free milk (55$ a can made from corn) and his stomach meds. A week later we no longer needed the ENT, lung doctor, breathing treatments, etc. Plus no more hospital stays other than him doing test to see if anything needed "repair" or if it was a case where he would be okay after a couple years.

At 24 months old he was perfectly healthy, medicine free drinking the mayfeild milk special... We tried to get him off the corn formula and went through allergy testing and eventually got him drinking the reg mayfeild stuff lol.

I honestly wanted to sue the out of that doctor, beat him up, cuss him out, you name it. But i never did. I just let it go and said eventually it will come back to bite him. Now he is prob loosing his med license, reputation, etc... IM LOVING IT!

There are only a couple people that if I ever saw again I would prob have some violent outburst, that doc being one of them.But also as carsons issues went away and he is healthy now and me having a nervous breakdown after I just wanted it all in the past. We are moving full speed a head with a healthy child, only needing speech therapy to get him up to speed, but the numbers of kids that need speech these days thats no biggie!

Of coarse things get "renewed" when I am pregnant and worried the same issues will go on with this one. The good part is I am well versed in who is the best of best in GI, lungs, etc. I also k now a good psych doc to go to for myself lol. But the one peace of mind I do have is that I can get through it, things do get better!

It was only a question of time for that unethical crook. As the father of a 4 year old myself, I might've kicked his behind. Glad to hear your son is doing well.

my son was born with the same issues, thank God we didn't have to go though what you and your son did. It was caught right away. I commend you on your strength

I have a story very similar to this. When I was 14 I developed a very strange ring shaped rash on my cheek. I went to a derm doc and they ran a ton of tests. She had to do several biopsies and told me "we can't rule out cancer." Two weeks of waiting for results on that were torture. Finally the bloodwork came back that I had Lupus. There are several forms of Lupus out there one is SLE and is very problematic and can be fatal. This was my diagnosis. After doing tons of research my parents decided to get a second opinion as I only had a few odd symptoms and the SLE diagnosis didnt seem right. They ended up finding the best doc in america for Lupus and had him look at all the tests. He was appauled that a dermatologist would have the brass to diagnose an internal diasease like SLE and said that all the results I had were textbook discoid lupus, not SLE. A third Dr. confirmed this, and the stage was set.
The following weeks produced a call from the insurance office wondering why I had been billed a two night stay in ICU from the derm office. My mom feilded the call and told them that she had done nothing right and put me through a ton of unwarented tests due to a misdiagnosis. This is all they needed to hear. Next thing you know she and I both were talking to the insurance companies lawyers and in about a month the Derm had lost her lisence, apparently I wasnt the only issue she had.
I learned a lot for this. Recently my fiance had some issues with a specialist and he actually threw his hands up and said "your on your own." Needless to say she got upset, where as I fired his kiester and found a new doc.
Its never fun to have an illness, the least a doc can do is try a little harder, I mean all that school couldn't have been easy?

You would think that the Doctors would be super intellegent througough(sp) people. I guess like in all professions you have ur idiots.
Honestly I think Carsons doctor didn't care. He was rude when he saw him, and just wouldn't even communicate with Carsons family doc, or us.
He was an ex "Army" doctor, which IMO didn't need to be touching children with his attitude. His office was even rude, out of 10 appts Carson had to his office he ended up in the hospital 9 times before he made it to the appt, and the office was going to "fire" us as patients for not coming to the appts, the thing was we were in the hospital at the time of the appt and called the office asap requesting that the doctor see him in the hospital. DUH, its hard to just check your child out of Childrens hospital just to see a doctor when the doctor could walk up to the room and see him. He was in the hospital so much dr's appointments were few and far between.

Im just glad the nightmare is over!

Lupus is a hard disease to diagnose, we had a neighbor back up in VA that had it and she was pregnant with her second child before they got a good diagnosis. That child is now autistic and is going to be permantly in the care of her family and brother all her life. I used to go up to VA and get her during the summer to spend time with her and give the family a break. SHe still writes me. I really miss that family! I grew up with the older brother which is a brainiac, not to mention a good hearted person. This whole family were so good to me and my mom after my dad passed. They got me into church.
The mother that has lupus has the external and internal, she is on a liver transplant list right now. I learned a lot abotu that illness from them, and the struggles they went through.

Anyways, long story short.... always question the doctor they can be wrong too lol

Well, the real thing is we put too much faith into medical science at times. I am a researcher and read countless journals and published papers and can tell you the majority are littered with errors and bad designs. It is incredible how often I hear something in the media, then out of my doctors mouth, and I know the study they are quoting is trash. This doesnt mean holistic approaches are better, the lion's share of herbal remedies are not available long before the FDA has to yank them for health hazards.
The only way to get healthy is to find a Dr who is willing to work with you and be patient (litterally). Time is sometimes the best medicine.

I'm glad to hear that Carson is doing well now. Ah, that good old Karma... What goes around comes around!

I have a number of stories like this (partly because I have a lot of medical issues, but also because many of the doctors we've seen aren't the brightest). I think the most...interesting one is about the time I got bitten by a brown recluse.

I had been playing outside one day when I was 14 or 15, high in the mountains and fields in southeastern Arizona. Over the next few hours, I developed an ulcer on my ankle. I thought it was strange, since I never felt anything bite me in the first place. And over the next few days, my condition declined. I was highly nauseous and dizzy, and I had a rash that looked like a thousand tiny bug bites. Our friends said it looked like a brown recluse bite, so we did some research and found out that it was definitely a brown recluse bite. We also found out that while brown recluses are highly venomous, they rarely inject enough venom to cause a severe reaction.

We thought I'd be fine, but we called the ask-a-nurse line at the clinic anyway. They asked if I had any nausea, rash, etc., which just happens to be the symptoms of a brown recluse bite, and they recommended that we go to the urgent care clinic. So we did. And the doctor that we saw was, well, really not very smart at all. The nurses knew more than him. In fact, the nurses ended up confirming that it was a brown recluse bite, because the "doctor" thought it was chiggers. In the middle of the desert. With a purplish-yellow ulcer on my ankle. And the symptoms of a brown recluse bite. The doctor hated that we were smarter than him.

And a more recent discussion between me, my dad, and my dad's friend...

Friend: If you get bitten by a brown recluse, you're dead.
Me: Actually, they're not really as dangerous as people think.
Friend: Have you ever been bitten by one?
Dad: Yeah, she has.
Friend: ...Oh.

You should have seen the look on his face. It was hilarious.

Yeah all the spiders in this country are hardly as dangerous as they make them out to be. Even the ominous black widow doesn't kill but only 1% of people bitten, and they are allergic to its venom as you might have guessed. The real dangerous insects in america are wasps and bees, again due to a high rate of allergies.
Walk in clinics usually have docs in thier residence or fresh out of med school. I would listen to the nurses or just go tell them what you think is wrong and ask for the proper treatment.

I honestly have never see anyone die from a spider bite, I ve seen a nasty skin infection from a brown reculse (my moms leg)...
However, I have seen 4-5 people in my little area die from bee stings. In the past year.
I know the night I got stung by a wasp it scared the out of me to think I could be allergic.
