Expensive in Australia

Why are fish more expensive in Australia than fish in the US? I remember talking to someone online and they bought a 12 inch Common Pleco for $16 US. Here in Australia a Common Pleco is $40 AUS for a 1.5 - 2 incher. They said they could give it to me for $30 AUS.

$16 US in AUS would be about $24, right?

Any reasons why they are more expensive here?

There is a bit of a financial crisis here, could that be it?

Good morning. I don't think that the economy has anything to do with the price of your fish. I think it's more of the fact things are just higher in Australia compared to the US. Chance are your cost of living is just a lot higher period. I've never been there although I'd love to someday. I don't see it happening though

also, most people don't want plecos once they're 12-14 inches and are trying to get rid of them quickly. it's a lot easier to sell a cute little 3 inch pleco at a higher price than an 18 inch monster fish!

and just to think we americans are complaining about rising prices...there's no way I could/would pay 24.00 for a common pleco.

try living in ireland, 1 litre of unleaded petrol works out at about

US $1.50
or
AUS $1.96

we get hit big for all sorts of taxes!!

If you have the time, and have a choice of lots of fish stores, the prices of fish vary a lot, but if you have to travel to the other side of town to get a good deal, then you have to add the cost of petrol too it too! LOL
Sometimes it's better to pay a bit more at your local.
In my case, I'm on the road a bit and I'm getting to know where all the stores are (sad but true). All I have to to is press 'Favorites' on my 'Tom Tom' if it's on the way to a job.
At the end of the day, if you know what you want, the stores will give prices over the phone. I've seen BN Pleco range from $10 - $30 for the same size fish!

Lots of factors influence the price of fish .
Are they locally breed or are they imported = shipping cost
Demand = more sales usually means a lower price
Store = where you buy can have a huge difference
