i have a 55 gallon community tank. i removed my two swordtails from it as they were picking on, and subsequently lead to the death of most of my apple snails.
I moved them to a 10 gallon planted tank. since the move they seem skittish and they hide out near the bottom of the tank. I swear they are depressed. is this possible?

I got a 25 gallon tall tank that will be their home soon. I need to finish cleaning it and get it all set up but then they will have a bigger tank.

is there a reason for this behaviour that i need to address?

Don't worry yourself to much. Your right in thinking it's their new surroundings. My honey Groumie's did the same thing when I first brought them home from LFS. Specially since they were there for so long. It took them about 3 days before they would even come out to eat. Today they own the tank!!
I do have a question pertaining to the water quality. Are they pretty much the same?

water quality is great. i planted it as heavily as i could too so it would be similar to the 55.
