| I've found a tank I'm VERY interested in on Craigslist. A 55g with wrought iron stand, filter, heater, lights, pump, gravel, and some danios if I want them. The seller will take $50.
I'm going to look at it sometime soon. Is there anything specific that should turn me off? What should I look for? What would I see that would make me not want to buy this tank? I've never bought a used tank before, so I could use a little help.
Thanks!
I jsut got a meeting date of Tuesday evening. I need some tips... Last edited by Lucy; May 2nd, 2009 at 07:52 PM.

| Look for scratches, and nicks in the glass. Check the seals. Ask if all the tank supplies work, ask how long it was set up for. I usually ask why they're selling it also, to see if they tell me if it's something wrong with the tank. That's a killer deal though! |

| If it's running now, sounds great. I would inspect for cracks, chips, seals, and scratches, but if you see it holding water and working...woweee! Condition of the livestock, ask about disease, why only danios in 55 gal? It still might need to be totally cleaned and sterilized, etc. But again wow for $50, great score if you can get it, better hurry! |

| They didn't really know what kind of fish were in there, said they thought they were danios. They said they were selling it for a friend. I think they really wanted to get rid of it.
Also said that the tank does hold water and is set up right now.
If I need to totally sterilize it, that's not a problem - I can use the filter from my 29g for awhile (it's rated for a 40g) to get the cycle going. |

| @djbrisdt: You'd be better off buying a completely new tank! By the time you got here and back, you'd have paid a new tank's worth in gas! :-p |

| i'd definitely sterilize it either way, who knows what kind of nasties are in there. i use a 1 part bleach 19 part water mixture, fill the tank outside (i do this in a bathtub as well but with a 55 it's probably too big) and let it sit with the bleach mixture. rinse it very, very well, and add lots of dechlorinator.
it's great that it's already set up and full, i'd definitely ask for pictures if they can get you any, especially if they are recent pictures of the tank with water in it.
congrats on a great deal! |
