(Brief History)
Hi, I've recently posted a couple threads regarding my little
GSP. He just moved into a "tall" type, 30 gal., BW tank. That night he was sucked into the filter because I did not cover the intake tube. Amazingly, he was still alive when I emptied the filter water back into the tank. I felt so bad (and stupid) after seeing how badly he was injured but he's seems to be getting better...
(The Facts)
No other tank mates, he has it all to himself. Currently using a Penguin 330 filter that I got at a yard sale. It did not come with the part to cover the intake tube. So, I'm using a bulky sponge type media (used in outdoor pond pumps/filters) to cover the intake. It is extremely ugly but the puffer has no complaints I'm sure!
(My Question)
Which of the following would be the best permanent filter solution:
A. UG Filter System - I came across a thread recently that showed how to pipe in a UG filter system to the intake of a Hang on Back type filter (ex. Penguin 330). The intake is split into 2
PVC pipes using a 'T', then elbowed into the bottom plate to improve flow rate. I used pea/marble sized river gravel for substrate, so it should circulate well. I know the Pros/Cons of a UG filter system but I really like the "clean" look of this setup and thought it would also be good for my messy eater.
Note: I do have 2 powerheads but I would rather not use them if possible since I'm a newbie and have no idea how to set them up exactly.
B. Would a FluValve 203
canister filter be a better choice? The 30g tank was given to me and included the FluValve 203. I tried it first. I installed the hoses, spray bar, intake, etc... as instructed in the manual but could never get it primed/working. Is there a trick to it? All the parts are in very good condition, sealed properly, etc...
C. OR should I just order the Penguin 330 replacement parts for the intake tube and keep it basic?
Thank you for taking the time to review my post and I appreciate any input/direction you can give me!
