Now that its getting hotter outside...

So I've realized with the Size of the tank I have the temperature Inside the tank...has Everything to do with the Room Temperature outside of the tank. Do I need to turn on my Air conditioners All ready? The temperature is fluctuating in the 83 degree area I'd imagine its probable higher mid-day when im not around. Fish havnt seemed to mind yet though...

Good morning. During the summer I usually have to turn down my heater in the tanks a bit. Too, I keep my lights off during the hottest parts of the day (off at 11am back on at 4pm).

Having the same problem here. It’s not even May yet and my indoor temperatures are hitting 86° during the day with everything closed up and my aquariums are holding steady at 82°. For heaven’s sake I live in Canada, if I start running my air now my neighbors will think I’ve completely lost it. Three weeks ago we had below zero temperatures. And then there’s the fact I need this time of the year to recover from the gas bills before the electric bills take me on for round two.

And aquarium coolers just are not in my budget. I just might have to try my fish on the rocks.

I've had my a/c on all weekend. It's 60F outside but 80F inside no matter what I do. The apartment doesn't get any cross flow so there's really no efficient way for the hot air to vent...not to mention you can't really leave all your windows open when you're gone.

I feel so wasteful, but I think i'm just the victim of poor design.

The condo I purchased is just that… an East facing apartment. I guess the only difference is that instead of calling it “rent” they call it “condo fees” and I my “landlord” doesn’t own the place, my “bank” does.

The first year I purchased the place my wife (not wife at time) and I decided to curl up in front of the fire place (gas) on a cold winter evening with a bottle of wine. Within minutes the temperature has risen above 90° so I opened the patio door. That didn’t work either after a total of 5 minutes (even with the patio door open) the unit was pushing 100°. So we spent the rest of the evening sipping wine in front of the open patio door wiping sweat off our foreheads. How romantic. So that was the last year I even bothered to light the pilot-light in the fireplace.

So here I sit on a mid-morning spring day. A large fan sits in my patio door drawing cool air in while another fan sits in the bedroom window pushing warm air out. The effectiveness of these efforts is that it is currently 53° outside and 83° inside and my aquariums are still sitting at a rather steamy 81°.

I’ve looked at many DIY coolers none of which I would trust or have in my home. The idea of floating frozen bottles of water in my aquariums doesn’t much appeal to me. For my 35 gallon the cheapest commercial cooler I’ve found would cost me around $700, which doesn’t much appeal to me either. And I’m not sure how effective it would be as it would only be adding heat to my apartment.

To add to the problem the units include 5 appliances. So cook dinner on the stove, run the dishwasher and do two loads of laundry and the local weather station reports an unexplained warm front moving through the city.

It just seems ludicrous to me to turn on the air when it is only 53° outside.
