I feel so wasteful, but I think i'm just the victim of poor design. |
The condo I purchased is just that… an East facing apartment. I guess the only difference is that instead of calling it “rent” they call it “condo fees” and I my “landlord” doesn’t own the place, my “bank” does.
The first year I purchased the place my wife (not wife at time) and I decided to curl up in front of the fire place (gas) on a cold winter evening with a bottle of wine. Within minutes the temperature has risen above 90° so I opened the patio door. That didn’t work either after a total of 5 minutes (even with the patio door open) the unit was pushing 100°. So we spent the rest of the evening sipping wine in front of the open patio door wiping sweat off our foreheads. How romantic. So that was the last year I even bothered to light the pilot-light in the fireplace.
So here I sit on a mid-morning spring day. A large fan sits in my patio door drawing cool air in while another fan sits in the bedroom window pushing warm air out. The effectiveness of these efforts is that it is currently 53° outside and 83° inside and my aquariums are still sitting at a rather steamy 81°.
I’ve looked at many
DIY coolers none of which I would trust or have in my home. The idea of floating frozen bottles of water in my aquariums doesn’t much appeal to me. For my 35 gallon the cheapest commercial cooler I’ve found would cost me around $700, which doesn’t much appeal to me either. And I’m not sure how effective it would be as it would only be adding heat to my apartment.
To add to the problem the units include 5 appliances. So cook dinner on the stove, run the dishwasher and do two loads of laundry and the local weather station reports an unexplained warm front moving through the city.
It just seems ludicrous to me to turn on the air when it is only 53° outside.
