need help plumbing tank

Hey fellow fishlorneans:I have a very confusing situation that i need some quick help with.
I have a 40 gal acrylic tank which came from a going out of business LFS.The tank has a drilled hole in the upper r side. The hole holds 1.25" DIY PVC bulk-head which is perfect for plumbing 1.25" pvc pipe to my diy sump. But when i plumbed everything together,it did'nt work right.Water filled up tank to the point of almost overflowing. Then suddenly water gets sucked down pipe in a ugly slurping loud manner. This was a continuious process.I got fed up and took everything apart. Can anybody tell me what I'm missing here to fix this problem. I want to put a sump on this tank asap.
Thank you to all.

Sounds like it's sucking air. Did you prime it?

It sounds like the hole was drilled for over flow only. That high up would make using a sump difficult. Specially with a straight piece. You would have to us gravity or an elbow.
Do you have a constant flow of water to your 40?

The thing is, I'm not really a pro at this kind of stuff. I'm still in a learning process as i go along. I've been online trying to find some help to this problem to no avail. The flow from sump would be pushed by a Quiet 1 one 2200 at 581 GPH @10' so i would be doing about 500 gph @ 4' so this is the general flow i'll be having to my 40... I read somewhere that a person had a similar problem but he had 4 hole in back of tank. In the end he mentioned that he put a tee on pipe and that kinda stoped the hard slurping in tank from bulkhead. His second problem now is, he has a loud water fall in his livingroom now. WOW! LOL If it aint one thing it's another.
Thank you for your feedback Miz Ramzi please dont stop!

But if theres anybody, but a dead body out there that can further help with some input or a direct impact solution to this hair pulling problem, please feel to chime in. Thanks to All!!!

The problem you have is that the water is syphoned from the tank to the sump,
As the water goes down the pipe to the sump it leaves a vacum behind it and it trys to pull more water from the tank.
This syphone needs to be broken so the water will flow without the vacume affect.
This can be done by using a "stand pipe"
This link helped me

This is the link to my blog that shows the overflow setup we used.

If you have any Qs please ask, but note that I can only log on on the weekend due to work.

Again, i have to bring to all those attention who's trying to help me, that this is an acrylic tank from an going out of business lfs. It's the standard blue tanks that you see at petco etc...
Therefore they're not bulilt like the average tanks. This tank was made with a divider (removable) and has two (2) oval openings at top of tank thus makes it hard to even place a HOB filter on it. I had to trim some of the top on one side to widen oval top just to place a hob on tank. I said that to say, i cannot place anything into or onto tank via Dorso standpipe. I just need to figure out how to plumb pipe from upper R side hole to sump in a smooth flowing manner without all the filling, slurping filling, slurping affect.
Thanks Peterpiper. Please continue to try and help. As well as Anyone else out there on the air waves. I'll get some batteries for camera and try to post some pic to give you all a general idea of what i'm talkiong about.
Again... Thanks to all!
