Moving Log. :p

So I'm moving all my tanks over to the apartment atm (it's slowly happening) so I thought I'd keep a running update of how it's going. Currently I'm basically fully moved over (except the tanks) so it's an akward set up at the moment.
However the moving to date:

Saterday after noon (Apr. 11/09)
  • Moved my desk over which meant that I needed to move Mama and Coolie (they were on the desk). Coolie is now set up in the corner of my kitchen (I'll be doing my homework there so I wanted to keep him where he'd bet the most attention). And Mama is in the same spot ontop of my desk (now i the bedroom).
  • There were mixed results in this move Coolie and Mama took it like the champs that they are but my poor little Ozzi (the Otto) wasn't looking good after I transferred him back into the tank once at the apartment. I had to go home after the move and so I had to leave him and hope for the best... and now there isn't a sign of him anywhere in the tank. I'm thinking that the fishy aliens took him to the big fishtank in the sky.
ATM that's it but the next step in the move is to get the 20 gal up and ready to go so I can transfer Babies and the Cory's over with their AQ30 filter. Once I do that then I'll be able to add the divider to the 10 gal tank and give Max and Ruby each half which will give Red back his whole tank. Which will make everyone other at the house happy till I get them moved. I'm thinking that I'll move Nighthawk next since his tank won't fit on the shelf... maybe put it ontop of my book case...

Anyway that's the story so far. Hopefully Ozzi will be the only casualty.

p.s. I'm also trying to figure out how to set up a 29 gal and get 3 goldies but not sure how to speed cycle the tank, don't know if I'll be able to fishless cycle it before I leave for my trip and I don't really have a whole lot of mature media to spread around since the bio-loads in all my tanks are really light so don't know if they'll be worth much to help the cycle along...

Good luck with the move! I hope that everything continues to go well. I am sorry to hear about Ozzi though

As far as the goldfish go.....Do you have access to TSS? I just used it and it worked great. If not, buy some bio media and hang it in one of your existing tanks. After a few weeks you should have enough bacteria on it to sucessfully seed your new tank

Whew, I hope I never have to move tanks like that.
How long are you going to be gone? It might be a good idea to hold off getting the goldfish until you get back and put a peice of raw shrimp (in a mesh bag) in the tank to cycle it.

I think that I have a partial bottle left would that be enough you think? I mostly was just using a capful of it (after shaking well) to speed cycle some betta tanks (seemed rediculas to use the whole bottle on a 2.5 gal tank)
Thanks Shawnie I might take you up on that since the only way to get TSS in canada that I've been able to find is aquariumplants.com.

For a time scale I'd like to get them soon they're in a really tiny tank at the store but that's gonna depend on $$$. I don't have the tank yet so I can't make plans till I do. I'm waiting for the stubborn Petcetera people to drop they're prices again. Almost everything in the store is 50% or 70% off but they haven't dropped the tanks lower then 20% yet.

well for a reference, it costs $20.79 for a big bottle of TSS that will do up to 75 gals...and shipping is around $3-5 depending on where you live..so you let me know if its a better price or not

Oh that's a better price. I paid $50 plus for the two bottles that I got last time I believe. Does the $3-$5 price include shipping across the border?

My sis lives in Toronto and she's told me not to send presents as they have to pay sometimes, so I've never sent any thing more than gift cards. I'd like to know though am too lazy to research, maybe ups site?

Anyway, good luck w/ the move and sorry I can't send the tank tower to you up ther, but if you made the road trip I can help u load it up...LOLOLOLOL

If I buy something from an American company, they calculate the price in USD + shipping in USD and then convert the whole thing to CAD. Shipping can be ridiculously expensive eg. DrsFS want $75 to ship one bottle of Vitachem to Alberta. I think in some respects customs add on GST at the border? not sure how that works, I guess it would depend on whether it would have GST here or not. I haven't seen this stuff for sale so I don't know if it does. Should probably find out if there's any issue with sending 'live bacterial culture' over the border?

If you ship something privately from the US to Canada, I'd assume the shipper would pay whatever the rate is which will depend on the weight of the parcel, the delivery method (courier, mail) and the time to deliver (overnight, regular post). In that case, I'd shop around!

hmmm
you could probably just send it as a regular parcel though the mail.

according to the USPS site the shipping doesn't look at that bad...

Whoops one other thing to report on the moving log. I'm trying to combat the algae issue and since the ambient light in the new place is fairly constant I turned the tank light time down (at 4 or 6 hours now I think) however the plants in the tank are high-light plants (amazon sword, red ludwig, and mondo grass) is that too short a time?
