grossness in my mouth >:o

Yesterday I set up my new canister filter on my 20g. This is the tank that recently held fish with camallanus worms; they were all relocated to different tanks some time ago now and the tank ran empty for a week with a bunch of filter media and 10 PPM ammonia. Yesterday I had vacuumed the gravel really well and changed out 95% of the water, then refilled it halfway as I set up the canister. Due to my lack of knowing what on earth I was doing I encountered some troubles with having air bubbles in the hose, that were really screwing up getting the filter's initial prime (got that sorted, it's now working swimmingly, I'd made a silly mistake and after fixing such it went smoothly), and since a turkey baster wasn't being effective at getting the air out I sucked on the hose. I got some of the tank water in my mouth.

So I bet we've all had tank water in our mouths from time to time, and I didn't swallow anything, but today I'm feeling really ....green. Might be just the knowledge that there was all sorts of muglies in that tank, not to mention ammonia. Just wondering if anyone knows if anything I might have taken in will potentially be harmful? of course if I start to feel anything worse than 'green' I'll go straight to a DOC, but meanwhile --??

hmmm.... ammonia isn't exactly healthy but as for what would be living in a tank... well pretty much anything. however considering the amount of ammonia that you've been running in it there shouldn't be anything to terrible in it... unless the meds weren't all out of the water...

yuk.... that might be a concern...

yeah I didn't run carbon before the ammonia. I guess if I did take in any worm larvae well I also got some dewormer...

maybe it's just the thinking about it all that's the issue. Yuck. I'm sure if I were going to get ill I would have by now, but the thinking about what was in there... No more sucking on canister hoses!

Edit: I was told by several different vets that this particular worm held no danger to humans (good thing too)

That's a reality with dogs, cats, cattle...there's likely something with fish too (statistically there sort of has to be right?) but I don't think right now I want to know.

LOL sorry hate to laugh at your distress. Hope you get to feeling better soon. I think we've all been there. That is one reason I only use 3 chems. I've seen ICH treatment (and used it many years ago) that contained embalming fluid, or formaldehyde ...Never again. Too the bottle said it was known to cause cancer in the state of California....LOL
You'll be fine.

Yeah, laughing ok...I'll be fine...just...green...

Reminds me of a website I found once for helping to diagnose some fish disease, said 'Watch your fish for poo activity as often as possible!' then 'umm....this is a hobby?' I found that hilarious. The things we do for our pets!

Nope, can't say that I have. lol

Prairielilly, I hope you're feeling better soon. There's probably no reason to worry but on the slight chance if you're still not feeling well in a couple days it would be a good idea to get checked out.

Mouthwash. Lots and lots of antibacterial mouthwash.

Usually I keep a water bottle beside me all day by the computer. Today, I can't stand it. Uggh.
