| Unsure what this filthy is that came with my 120 In what I neglected as mostly a box of odds and ends I have this really dirty device called a Rio 2100 submersible. I managed to pull on it and have it fly apart like spring loaded trash can. It was so matted with dry hard smelly stuff that Iv had to drop soak it in water/vinegar for an hour and now its starting to look like something. Out of the bucket for the photo below, anyone know what this is and how its used? |

| Thanks Swanie. Anyone know where I can get a PDF manual on this thing for specs and operation. The tag also says 2650 LPH, seems like a small filter for that much flow. Ill have to turn it on in the bath tub and see what it dose using the light switch so as not to get electrocuted LOL.
I suppose to get the answers I need Ill have to somehow move this post to the filter expert section. How about dropping what you doing there Lucy and press that magic button for me LOL (respectfully). Last edited by CWO4GUNNER; March 16th, 2009 at 08:35 PM.

| im going to assume it was probably used for a powerhead for that size tank ...although 90% is under water, there is a spout that hangs out of the top for great water surface aggitation ...dr fosters and smith sells them http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...CID=C12188x007 i use one in my outdoor pond |

| Wow thanks both of you, good info that explains it's function and application. Give me ideas on how to use this outside maybe. I really hate internal filters but perhaps I can use the pump portion to power a DIY canister.

| Well soaking this pond pump in WDV really helped break up all the gunk that was solidified inside. Even the impeller housing, and it has a huge impeller pasted with gunk. After a few pressure washings with the garden hose nozzle and reassembly I decided to test it out submerged in a bucket from 20 feet away encase there was a short. It fired right up spewing water like a fountain so fast that the garden hose wide open could not keep up with the rate of flow, I had to keep shutting the pump off to let the garden hose catch up. I have decided that for now Ill use this pond pump and attached sponge filter "as is" until I can come up with a canister design that will let me utilize the head pressure to pump water out of the aquarium into a canister on the floor and back up again, sort of two filters for one. OK time to get the aquariums switch out and changed. |

So its just a workhorse pump really, the key is having the ability to make good use of it |

| Hi there gunner at 690 gph it would make a real good return pump for a sump....Rio makes power heads and pumps I use one in my tank and never had a problum with it... Now it is a lot smoller then 690 GPH would blow my poor fish out of the water lol... Rob Last edited by grump; March 18th, 2009 at 01:08 AM.

| The guy I bought the tank from said it actually did a better job cleaning the water then the Fuval 402 he sold separately (Grrr). So I have great hopes for it but eventually would like to keep it out of the tank and just use the pump segment to push water through hoses for a floor canister. I like canisters because they force water through the media and are relatively compact, and the potential mess contained inside. I just have to make sure I have it set up where it cant leak and maintains prime as these pumps I found out are not self priming, a potential impeller melt down. |

| It is a power head. I used to have one just like it. Although it is an older model. Mostly used in breeding tanks. They are also used for undergravel filters. |

| I remember about 2 months ago at PetSmart while looking at some starbusrt platy's a lady next to me said "I'm going to get some for my 14ga and this will make 16 fish total". I asked her aren't you worried about overcrowding? She replied "heck no, I got two power heads". That was the first time I heard the term powerhead used and I was trying to image what new device this was that could offset overcrowding. Then I found out now that its really just an impeller pump pretty much Identical to any impeller pump used on and hang filter or canister filer, just bigger in some cases but basically a magnet driven impeller on a shaft with an intake port and outflow port. So as far as Im concerned like the KFC chicken commercial says "parts is parts" LOL. Oh and of course I know now that powerheads cant do magical things like offset overcrowding, at least not in a basic application. Last edited by CWO4GUNNER; March 18th, 2009 at 04:09 PM.
