| Craziest Fish Experience Ever. Well after a 3 day vacation, my girlfriend and I come back to her bedroom in her apartment (the fish room) with a terrible surprise. First, the biggest and most dominant danio is missing. I know my log fish could have snacked it but he can barely get a ghost shrimp down. So the biggest of the "snacks" is gone (even though Troy shows no interest usually). So after being severely disappointed I turn and look at my 8 gallon and notice there is no fish! It should have a dwarf gourami and a dwarf puffer (I know terrible combo but the LFS said it'd be alright, and it really was to be honest). After turning on the lights and looking around the tank my girlfriend notices the dwarf gourami is in her roommates goldfish bowl that we were babysitting. I was like holy fish! How is that to happen? The top to the bowl is only four inches across (not sure the circumference) so I find it highly unlikely that my Otto would leap out of his home and into a less desirable unheated goldfish bowl. The top was so small that I could not net him out and had to put him in a bucket to scoop. Surprisingly he looks really healthy and happen even with this wild circumstance. Later I found Clyde, the dwarf puffer, laying in the middle of the carpet, dry as a bone. Can someone please help explain to me what exactly happened? My girlfriend locked her door but someone could have sneaked in. (hopefully not) What could have caused my animals to act so crazy?
Also have you fish fanatics had anything this crazy happen to you before? |

| Well when we came to the apartment the main door was dead bolted and we had to sneak through her window. Since it is college spring break two of her roommates are gone and the one that is here keeps to herself in her room. Like I said before the bedroom was locked though I've seen the kind of lock she has broken into with a card before. Everything in the room was just as we left it, the camera was on the desk, the wii still lying around, and so on. That makes me think what kind of person would go to such great lengths to break into the apartment and then into her room just to mess with our fish? But a gourami jumping into a goldfish bowl also sounds insane. I'm at a loss to what exactly went on during our short break. Whatever did happened is a mystery, but I'm glad we came home to truly rescue our little Otto! |

| It's not as insane as you might think. Years and years ago my brother had a goldfish that he kept in a bowl. Instead of using a filter, he would suck out the fishes poop with an eye dropper and deposit it, along with some water, in one of those plastic canisters that photographic film comes in. One morning he woke up to find the goldfish missing. After much searching he discovered his goldie face down in the film canister!
It gets better
The fish lived. True story. |

| Maybe they where trying to pull a nemo!!! That is really weird. Was the tank and goldfish bowl pretty close together? Was there anyway the gourami could have jump out of the back of the 8 gallon or was it completely covered? |

| No, the 8 gallon is not covered . But the bowl and tank are very close but on different ledges with the top of the bowl being beneath the top of the aquarium by like eight inches. They are also only a couple inches apart. dancerhas that's a terrific story! Makes me wonder what our fish are really up to when we are not there to stare... |

| Years ago I kept Red Breast, Bream and an 18" cat fish and 2 bass in my 155 gallon that I caught in the creek in front of my house. I had them all for several years. The Red Breast and Bream all mated with their partners. I netted the fry and put them in the creek before they were eaten. One day I caught a blue crab and added it to the tank as well. He lived for several years.
I looked into the tank one morning and found the Blue Crab belly up. I was so sad. So I netted him out of the tank and placed it back in the creek. A week later I found another Blue Crab in the same tank. I accused my roommate of catching another crab from the creek and adding it to my tank. Come to find out the crab had molted and what I netted from the tank was his molted shell. I couldn't believe it. I had no idea that crabs molted. During the time I had the Blue Crab he molted 4 times after that. It was so AWESOME. Talk about some AGGRESSIVE FISH to keep. I got soaked every time I fed them. My 18" catfish would take a jumbo shrimp from my hand every morning. They all out grew the 155 so I acclimated them back into the creek. |

Also have you fish fanatics had anything this crazy happen to you before? | Im having a hard time following this thread, maybe its too early in the am for me? What I read is that your d.gourami jumped out of the tank into the goldfish bowl. BUT then you go on to say that you rescued your Otto from that bowl and no mention of rescueing the d.gourami?
As far as having an open top tank it is very likely that fish will at times jump out and Im betting that at some point you will find the danio dried up somewhere. Its also very possible that the d.Gourami jumped out of the tank and landed in the goldfish bowl, luckily that is.
ok.. re reading the the rest of the posts. So both the Gourami and the otto jumped into the goldfish bowl? Now that I find very strange and unlikely but of course, anything is possible. It does sound like someone is messing with you. Last edited by capekate; March 4th, 2009 at 06:40 AM.

| Kate, I think Otto is the name of his D.Gourami.
Slug had a thread a while back with an insane pic of his discus who jumped from it's tank into another tank. |

| I think fish jump out due to desperation of some need either because of water conditions or lack of food. I read this is especially true about the Gobi Dragon which is known not only for leaving a tank that has poor food supply because owners don't know how or what to feed them. Amazingly they are also known for being able to live for extended periods outside of water by forming a mucus membrane and gulping air. Our LFS found one of their GD's on the floor who spent almost 2 days outside of water looking dead but when placed back inside came out of its protective shelled skin and was just fine.
This story of the Dwarf Gourami spontaneously changing into an Otto while leaping into a fish bowl is a bit far fetch though. |

| Hey everyone thanks for all the replies!!! If you read some of my other threads (probly didn't) you'd find that my dwarf gourami is named Otto. I think the other fish is spelled oto, so sorry for the confusion!!! I'm sorry the post was hard to follow but it was late at night I was in a flux due to all that chaos. Yah to clear things up: I came home after 3 days of being away to witness a variety of surprises such as finding my DG swimming with a goldfish. Sorry I love every fish for who they are so sometimes I refer to them by their name. |
