need a computer guru

Somehow (it must be magical) a couple of important assignments I was working on have dissapeared. I figure that they must have been saved in the wrong part of the computer but I don't know where! (they were definetly both saved.) Is there a way I can just use some sort of search that'll check my entire computer for all MSword files?

yes there certainly is. I'm a network engineer... so I'm sure we can get through this. What operating system are you using?

I'm assuming Windows OS: in the search function (right-click the start button) type "*.DOC" minus the quotes. Make sure to direct it to search the entire computer, all files and folders, and search within folders.

In Mac: about the same thing, just type into the Spotlight pulldown.

Good luck

Windows Vista

EDIT: Parrie Lilly I did that and they are not there.

I've even checked just files modified today and they're not there. I know that they were I could see them saved on the screen. According to the top it said something like 'local > temp' and there was a hudge list of what looked like progarm folders (skype ect.) however if I try and trace it back from my coputer to that heading the folder is empty!

Thanks Dozey! I checked the search everywhere button (among others) and it found them!

For some reason I don't think that this would be a normal plce to find them: "Temp(C:\Users\****\AppData\Local)".

THANKS !!!!!

I think that's where Windows saves a copy of anything you're currently working on.

Glad it worked out!

Nope it sure wasn't... fortunately you got lucky... Word automatically saves your work in a temp directory and that's where you found them... save them where you know where to find them.

And glad you found them... It's awful to loose work!

It was weird usually they save to my documents. I've never had a file just saved where-ever before.

Really glad I got them back I've been working on them all morning and their due tommorrow.

You must not have actually saved them. Word will save your work every 10 minutes automatically (I think it's 10 minutes by default) incase your computer/Word crashes so you can recover them.

You may have lost a few minutes of work but getting a days work back minus a few minutes sure beats starting all over again.

*TIP* When every I start a new document I save it before I even start working on it. To explain better... I open a new word document and save it (Dozey's research) for example. Then I start typing.

Makes sense. lol
scared me though.
I still think that I saved though. B/c I hit save and and titled it and did the whole speal. Ah well.
I'll blame it on my ghost virus. I think that there's something up with my laptop but Sophos says its fine.
Maybe then were here.
