| flower horns are a cross/hybrid as you know between a few different cichlids..they are so expensive now as breeders have been very selective on trying to get such an array of colors and stripes as well as how much bigger they can get their bumps ....so mainly its the selective breeding process that makes them so expensive..not to mention they get HUGE ...theres one at my fish store that has to be a foot long ....100 gal minimum tank requirements as well ...you getting one? the one at my fish store looks like this one big flowerhorn.jpg |

| Oh nooooo, they get too large & aggressive for me to get one.
I was just looking at them on Aquabid, and the cheapest one was over $200.
I was just wondering what made them so special.
And Nick - I think they're so pretty! |

| Yeah, I agree,,,I can't decide if it's cute or ugly...lol..Also, I might be wrong, another reason they are so expensive its because they are keeping it a big secret what cichlids they are cross breeding, it's like a secret family recipe..lol. |

| I know a guy who keeps flowerhorns. I don't know if they're for breeding, or what... I like their colors, but the lump is sort of weird. Its sort of like the problem some people have with plecos, they're soooo ugly but really cute. |

| Flower Horn is a hybrid fish and the formula of breeding these species of chicillid is very unknown thus you cannot found any flowerhorn in the wild. It is a product of selective breeding and the first flowerhorns that are released in the market way back in time are much much more expensive that breeders got interested to breed and sell their fish also in a very high value. |

| These fish used to not be too expensive. For some unholy reason, they have seen a surge in popularity recently and the prices have gotten just silly. The same can be said for a Super Red Texas (SRT's).
IMO they are very gross, ugly looking fish but some folks definitely like them, as the price tag will show. |

| I used to think that they were cool looking, but after having mine for a week I sold it. I was afraid to put my hand in the tank! I thought he was going to break the glass of the tank because he started ramming it so hard when I came near the tank. I seriously thought he wanted to eat me |

| Once they start short cutting the process with gene and DNA manipulation and mass cloning the prices the variety will make this guy look plain.
But I think he looks pretty cool and worth it if they can come up with docile and schooling attributes. |

| Cyphotilapia frontosa is showing up as several variants these days, 6 Bar
from Burundi, Tanzanian 7 Bar, Kavalla, Kigoma, so called "blues",
most noticeable is the Zaire Blue, then Cape Mpimbwe Blue, also the
Zambian blue. Some of these are subtle differances, others are strikingly
recognizable such as Zaire.
Most Frontosa mature at about 4 years of age. This is a major factor most
people attribute to their challenge in spawning them. They see a large
fish and assume it must be mature. I have kept a frontosa to almost 10 years of age, and heard stories of much longer, like a 14 year old breeding pair.
And........
The Midas Cichlid is one of the most beautiful fish of Central America. In its natural environment, it exists in various colours – ranging from grey to orange. It is assumed that the yellow-coloured fish surpassed the grey because it is more aggressive – and could therefore populate the deeper areas of the rivers and thus escape the dynamite fish, which populates the waters near the banks. In a tank, the Midas Cichlid sometimes drives the owner mad because of its aggressiveness. Last edited by MizRamzi; March 18th, 2009 at 03:08 PM.
