Interesting thought.

I was talking last night with someone about aquaculture and they mentioned something that got me thinking. They said that if you had the cash one of the ideal aquacultre set ups would be to have a massive hydrophonic greenhouse with slow growing plants (think cabbage) and run the water from the aquaculture tubs through the greenhouse (under the plants with their roots in the water) and let the plants do the majority of the filtration for you.
I think that sounds like a really neat idea. Kinda gives me idea's for interesting ways to keep house plants alive and help filter you're water. What do you guys think?

that sounds really interesting, it should work but it would have to be really heavily planted and you'd have to have a big enough tank for it to be worth it. i think for it to be effective you'd have to have a LOT of plants and a big tank, but it's a really cool idea!

A lot of "green" type people have this kind of system set up to filter all of their waste water. Believe it or not the Bush ranch in Texas is set up to do this. You can do a little research and find out what types of plants are needed and how many for the amount of both water and waste needed to be filtered. Its a simple math equation and your off to the races.
As far as aquaculture the initial set up can be very expensive. Having a system that doesnt use filters or any such thing would be helpful in relieving that cost.
For plants that produce a food product I dont know what exactly could be used in this set up. Most plants do well in traditional agricultural set up merely on the fact that they have been selectively bred for that. Aquaculture and hydroponic agriculture are a pretty nice idea in theory, but you would have to research the plants vs waste and really put a lot of sweat equity into the project. A good deal of hydroponically grown plants are genetically modified and that tends to upset a lot of consumers. This is an interesting idea in theory however.
