Just Some Advice...

Hey, I just thought I'd mention this as some advice to people on this forum. When you buy fish at my LFS, they put the fish in the plastic bag, then in a brown paper grocery bag. They say the fish don't like to watch the world spin around them. All the fish I have bought there, aside from being very healthy, were very unstressed the whole acclimating process, and were eating the day I brought them home. Whereas the fish I've bought at Petco didn't eat for days. I know this might be relative to the health of the fish, but the fish from Petco were healthy other than that.
I just thought I'd mention that if your LFS doesn't do that you might want to try bringing your own bag and seeing how it works out. As I said in the title, just some advice...
I would be curious to know if anyone else does this though, and if it makes a difference in the stress level for the fish.

I've never had anyone do this for me but it's not a bad idea..I've seen many people say and I've read that if a fish is stressed or while trasporting to keep it dark..When I do fish rescues I put a towel over the bucket so it's dark.
Every fish I have is just put in a bag, they are always eating the same day i get them home and acclimate just fine..but that doesn't mean they weren't a little stressed...I always think of the crocodile hunter, He always would cover the croc's eyes to lesson the stress..I would think it would be the same with fish..

When I euthanized a fish I wrapped the container he was in inside a towel for this very reason... I'm sure that it probably at least contributes a little to stress levels.

They recommend transporting fish in dark containers. I took a betta on a 4 hour car ride in a cooler in the dark and he acted like he'd never even left his tank.

That's interesting, I'll have to try that the next time i get new fish from the LFS and see what kind of difference it makes

I do the same, partly to keep the trip dark and as undisturbing as possible, and partly to provide some insulation against the air outside the bag.

i thought the LFS usually give one of those plastic grocery type bags (which are not transperent) so its easier to carry?, i have seen people use boxes effectively although they bought like 10-15 bags of fish maybe not efficient to use when buying 1-2 fish.

I have a black cooler that I use to transport fish in. I guess i never noticed the difference since I used it to keep the fish from hot/cold.

I always mean to take a small cooler with me to the store expcially during cold weather but always forget...lol. Last time I opened my coat and stuck the fish inside it up against my chest and the store employee looked at me in amazment and said...wow thats a good idea...it was about -10 out.

Yep I do the same thing! Its amazing how fast the water temp will fall when your carrying a bag of water/fish to your car from the store parking lot. Poor lil guys.. I always feel so bad for them when Im bringing them home, they must be freaking out not knowing whats going on...
Coolers are another great idea... and a paper bag as well. The plastic bags from the store are not really transparent so the fish cant really see outside of their bag..

I've done the bags in jacket thing. I'd also bought a new thremometer. I'm glad to say that at a cozy -15ish *C the parka can keep fish cozy at 25*C.
