Sound

Has anyone ever heard that sound (loud in particular) can hurt fish? My son is in band and they have a fish tank in the band room. All their fish died an some kid told them it was because of the loud music and he said that he put some kind of 'sound coating' on the tank!!?

I have heard that. The sound waves can be felt in the water.

Fish can be sensitive to noise as loud noises can resonate through the water.

This is unlikely to kill them outright but will frighten and stress them which could lead to other problems.

I would suggest that the noise, as well as other factors could be a major player in the death of your son's fish.

We were watching a movie last night with beautiful classical music in it. All my discus were lined up in the corner toward the screen, even the cardinals were hanging out over there. I thought that was very interesting. Either the light and movement or the sound was appealing to them.

But loud violent noise I would avoid. I have to get some tree work done outside by the pond and I'm wondering if I need to move the fish, worrying about the logs falling and the chainsaw noise.

interesting responses...never thought about it. Have you heard of a coating that can be applied to a tank that will decrease the affects of the sound?

I think it's quite unlikely as you couldn't really cover the entire tank as then you couldn't see your tank.
(most sound proofing tends to be in the form of thick foam or padding)

however I am unsure - there may be a product designed with this intended purpose...

a thin coating would only be able to reflect a very narrow band of frequencies. foam is used because it has all different shapes embedded into it, which can absorb many different frequencies.

so there could be such a product, but it's not as effective as the user might think.

I didn't have fish when i was in a band...but from what I remember, live rock music could probably liquify their brains! Fish generally ignore all kinds of noises, but such LOUD noises (like really loud!) would definitely stress them out.

I always wore ear plugs...fish don't have that option.

Agreed.

Your son might want to re think either:
a- his track list and taste in music
or
b- his chioce of pets.

(I hear pet rocks are quite hardy)

in that case, the noise is not a problem. Symphonic band's don't play that loudly. (I was in band in high school too!)

I would venture a guess that a student sabotaged the tank. Teenagers do retarded things...and now I'm quite certain I'm actually 23, only OLD PEOPLE talk like that!

It's a subtle transition from pining to join kids out on the street...too fingering my cell phone to call the cops on the little punks. hahahaha.

Choice B... unless he is planning on being a car salesman

because if you take 2 car salesmen, put them in a closed room with two pet rocks, come back an hour later, one rock will be missing, and the other one will be broke, and neither person will know what happened....
