My neighbor came over today, it was the 1st time in our house. She noticed the fish tanks right away and the first thing out of her mouth was: "It doesn't smell fishy in here!" I didn't have a response to that. She noticed I looked at her strangely then she explained that her brother keeps fish and his house smells bad. I think I know what she means though, when walking into some pet stores you can smell the fish tanks before you can even get to them. Why is that? What is that smell? Dead fish? Why don't mine stink? Does your house have a fishy smell? I know this is silly but I want to know.

I would think its a sign of an un-cycled aquarium. Probably ammonia and nitrite smell. that would be my best guess.

My tanks have never smelled, at least I never thought about it, nor was I told they smell.

people who dont do regular tank maintenance and let things decay will have a fishy smell...you are a good fish owner and be proud of yourself

I've had the smell occasionally, mostly from tanks that weren't filtered or cycled. (my snail tank attempt)
