Heater help needed!

It's ICH season up here in the Northwest as the cold comes in and the snow begins to fall. My water is colder than normal and my fish give a little flick every now and again. How can i successfully switch out my old tetra pre-set heater (does not allow adjustable temp.) to a visitherm stealth adjustable heater without having a big fat temperature swing in the tank?

Well, I would not know but if possible I would turn it up to the highest it will go and maybe if possible put a heater outside of the tank so it will warm up the room. You should probably get a submersablile heater from petco. It works well and keeps my tank nice and warm. I hope your fish don't die!

-Plecolover12, I'm not even sure your answer makes sense.
Why would you turn a heater all the way up? That would kill the fish.
If you turn on an aquarium heater outside the tank it will probably malfunction and if it's glass it could break.

Hi TFA, I've never switched heaters out and someone who has can probably give you a more accurate answer than I can.
I would probably add the stealth, set at the same temp as your old one. Give it a day to warm up. You should be able to remove the old one by then.
I'm pretty sure your temp should stay the same.

Good luck, I love the visi-therm stealths.

Good question. It will be interesting to see what members say to do. I have a nonadjustable heater in 1 of mine too....You could go ahead and put the adjustable heater in there and turn it on..When the temp rises your heater that is pre-set won't be heating anymore because it only kicks on when the water temp get to a certain degree..IF the other heater is doing all the work the pre set one won't be..Then just take the pre-set heater out..You would have to keep a close eye though to make sure it wasn't getting to warm..

I would put the stealth in , turn it up 2 degree's a day, and you should be fine ...

You know what, about the heater, sorry about that it was wrong. But I would keep it the same. Sorry about the bad advice. I know you might report me to the moderators because of this.

Well, bye and I was trying to help.
