Zebra Danio

Hi Everyone,
I wrote before about my goldfish and Pleco. And about how I had gotten an algae eater. The algae eater was attacking and goldfish and I was advised to flush the algae eater, but I just can't kill something like that. He didn't ask to be put in a tank with Goldfish, so I got another tank and put him in there. Then I got 3 Zebra Danios to keep him company. They are getting along great. Since it's a 10 gal. tank, how many Zebras can I put in there? Thank you for your help. Suzy

what type of algae eater? you are about maxed with your danios so I wouldnt add more of those and depending on which type of algae eater, you may be overstocked....who would reccomend flushing the poor fella?

hi Suzie,
Well zebra danios need a sufficient amount of space to swim and play tag in and they should be purchased in bigger groups...I'm love zebra danios and own 5. They are hardy!! Maybe purchase 15 g tank and stick them in there...! I think that you've maxed out plus zebras grow to about an inch.
Good luck,

I'm guessing this is a chinese algae eater...

Many people disagree, but I feel bottom feeders are negligible when calculating tank load. They don't add to water pollution, they just recycle. though they do use oxygen, so you have to keep that in mind.

(There's also the idea that bottom feeders release ammonia into the water faster than the detritus would ordinarily break down (by eating it). Again i disagree. I think it just removes the delay...as the new detritus waits to decay, the old detritus is decaying and polluting the water. It's the same amount of pollution entering the water column either way.)

Hi Everyone, He's a Chinese Algae eater, but from what I've read he is supposed to get 5 inches long. He hasn't grown much at all and is about 2 1/2 inches. I've had him for about seven months. He doesn't bother the Danios at all because they dart around all the time. I have really grown to love the little guys. I just got them at first to have something in the tank with the Algae Eater but they are so cute that I really enjoy having them. And they are so much cleaner than the Goldfish! The lady at the pet shop where I bought the Goldfish said to just flush them ( I bought some plain goldfish first to cycle the tank) and come back and buy some fish that I really wanted. Well, no way could I flush any of them so I still have all of them. She also said to flush the Algae eater if I didn't want him anymore. She said she is not a fish person and likes her dogs and cats better. I would like to get a bigger tank but have been layed off from work and can't afford to buy one right now. ( they are expensive) My husband had heard of a 50 gal. tank for sale, fish and all, on the radio but didn't get the number or tell me about it till much later. He said it all was to go for $50.00!! Man, I wish he had told me. I won't put anymore fish in my tanks. I just read that Danios like to school and wanted them to have more tank mates. Thank you for your help. Suzy
