| A Seasonal Reminder Winter's coming, and especially for folks in the north, that means higher energy bills and other extra costs. For many families, this can mean the difference between eating three meals a day and eating only one (or none). With the economy the way it is, the number of families affected by this is going to be much higher this year.
Because of this, many food shelters run low, or even run out of food around the holidays.
I'd just like to ask everyone to consider taking a moment sometime before Thanksgiving to donate something to a local food shelter. If times are tough, it doesn't even have to be money or food. It can be time. With the seasonal food drives, food shelves are likely to need help organizing their shelves.
You can often get deals for donating food, or turn it into a family experience. At Taco Bells in MN, you usually get a free item or a discount if you bring in a single canned good.
Another fun thing to do is the Gobble Gait or Turkey Trot, if you've got one near you. This is usually a Thanksgiving morning marathon that starts early enough that you can get back home in time to rest before an early Thanksgiving dinner, if your family has such things. There's a holiday train that rolls through the Midwest and Canada, offering free music (and local restaurants often have cheap/free food to support the effort, as well as bring notice to their businesses), and collecting canned goods for local shelves.
There are countless ways to do help out, and every little bit adds to a much greater whole.
Thanks for your time. |
