What fish to keep in a Amazonian Themed Community tank?

Hey guys Im going to be getting a 55g to 90g tank by the end of the year

and I wanted to make it into a amazonian river theme

what fish's can I keep in amazon community tank? and is there like any large cichlid fish that is peaceful and can be kept with the small ones?

I was thinking angles, pleco, rams and thats all I could think about. I would love a convict but I know they will kill the other fish, and there is the oscar which would eat them all so I wanna here your thoughts..

oohh and I dont like tetras.

and the last question what will I need for a amazonian theme tank plants, lights and substrates etc. oh and how would I keep the pH at 6.5?

Hi o0Faraz0o

I think by ruling out tetras you ruled out a whole class of very pretty easy to keep fish ..why do you dislike tetras?? ( just curious). I personally have neons and glowlights and love them...just need some angelfish for that tank...lol....good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

I went to Tennessee aquarium this weekend, they had a couple of amazonian themed tanks.

I saw a tanks with tetras (i don't like them much either), angel fish, discus, pacus, pirahanas, silver dollars, pleco's, south american cichlids (check out http://www.cichlid-forum.com/ for details of cichlids)

Now not all of those go together
, and they all come from different parts of the amazon which have different water conditions.

I would suggest doing research and find out if you want a blackwater set up or a faster river set up and then find the fish that will fit with what you want.

I kept some convict cichlids in a community tank for a while until i sold all the fish in the tank to make way for different fish. I put them in last and made sure they were the smallest ones. They would probably work if you went for semi aggressive tank with convicts and oscars?

Central America. I'll try to think of other ideas, but there are several varieties of tetras that would work, but by ruling them out it makes it harder. If you want a larger fish, you could go with a geophagus. They are very pretty. I don't know if they can be housed with angels and rams though.

Check out that link and check out all the differnt kinds of Geos. You might have to order them though. Not many LFS cary them. They are gorgeous fish though

well an oscar and convict tank wouldnt really be a community tank you know what I mean?

Im thinking cory's, angels, pleco (a small type), rams and then go buy a baby convict and raise it cause I have heard If they grow up with each other they aggressive fish wont be as aggressive. Also people tell me single convicts are much less aggressive.
