A not-so-personal debate

I just found the perfact stock for my future 50, and I have 8 inches to play around with. I saw some cool looking albino black tetras, similar to my current ones, except in albino form (duh...). However, these guys had been dyed, and my friend and I discourage each other about purchasing "genetically altered" fish, as we call them. They look so beautiful though, should or shouldn't I help myself to a small shoal?

You would be encouraging the market of dyed fish by buying them. The process of dying fish kills about 90-95% of the fish it is done on, which goes to show you have many must lose their lives just for less than moral people to have something that looks pretty. (Just my opinion though... we all have opinions and are each welcome to our own. )

true, very true. so, I guess it would be much better of an idea to pick up one of the pearl gouramis in the tank next door?

Yea, the dyed fish business is appalling and although I couldn't fault anyone for caring for the poor survivors, they are likely to be more sickly and I won't give any business to anyone carrying them.

That's the only way we can combat this horrific practice. sorry TFA101 but I wouldn't even buy the Gouramis in the next tank from these people, plenty of LFS out there with some standards (well sorta...)

I am torn on this issue. I completely understand that by buying dyed fish, you are supporting the practice.

However...

It's not the fault of those fish that they were dyed. They still deserve a good home. Heck, after going through what they have, they REALLY deserve a good home.

I didn't know about dyed fish when I stocked my tank in January of last year, and I took home two dyed tetras. I named the pink one Meg and the blue one Jack (yes, they were named after a certain band ). Sadly, Meg passed away earlier this year, but I still have Jack. I'm glad that I was able to give them a good home.

TFA - I personally wouldn't buy any died fish. I am also very surprised that you would consider it since you have been so vocal with your opinions about the rights of "Lolita." To me animal cruelty is animal cruelty...

I would not buy dyed fish. I see a big difference between genetically modified and dyed. ( you called them g/m in your post) Glofish are g/m and imo are not cruelly treated as the original fish were engeneered in the egg stage and they are bred the same way as ordinary fish. I would buy them( just cn't afford them...lol) but I would never buy dyed or tattooed fish as this is very painful and cruel to the fish.

but like bonochick said, they did have a rough life, and i think they should be given a good home after all they've gone through so they can enjoy the rest of their lives in a healthy aquarium. Then again, Mrsmuffin did bring up a good point about lolita the killer whale, so I might as well just stick to my normal fish, allow the dyed fish process to be boycotted, and continue to protest against the Miamiseaquarium.
