Moving fish tanks..

I bought a house and will be moving in a about 3 weeks.. I have a 29gal, 2 10gal, and a 5gal.. How in the world do I go about moving these tanks.. I just want to see if anyone out there has any good ideas.. Our new house is about 2 blocks away from where we are now so it isn't a far move and we can make multiple trips.. any thoughts anyone!??

Hi...If it's just a couple of blocks, it won't be a big problem. I would do it one tank at a time...remove fish into a bucket. Save 50% of tank water in buckets. Drain tank. Keep filter media wet in the buckets of water that you save. Get the tank set up in the new place, as quickly as you can. Match the water temp. to what the fish are accustomed to. Acclimate fish...and place in the newly set up tank. Hope this helps....

We didn't move, but bought two 55s that were up and running with fish. They were in town. We did pretty much what SCC suggests except we drained all the water. Remember water weighs 8.345 pounds per gallon. The hard part is getting the tanks in and out of the residences. The rest is easy - wet, but easy.

Have fun and enjoy your move.

That sounds like a good plan to me. You could also put some stress coat or fish protector in the water for the fish just to make the trip even easier for them.

I have looked at that stress coat and fish protector stuff before but i am very hesitant about using any chemicals, i keep shrimp, snails and clams and most things you add to a tank will kill them. Any side affects from using ether those products?

I try to add minimal chemicals to our tanks as well and use non-harsh products like Ich-Attack or Rid-Fungus (Made by the same company as Fish Protector) when possible.

I've not had to use Stress Coat because I can order Fish Protector online, so I'm not sure how it does.

I use both Prime and Fish Protector in all of our water and have seen that it's been good for fry, older fish, sick fish and even newly hatched cherry shrimp. So it seems to be very safe even for delicate inverts and fish.
