Freshwater Compatibility

The idea of community has sorta escaped my mind. I want some fish with attitude and personality. My first choise would be my first cichlid, angels. I love cories and cherry barbs too, but are they compatible with angels? Are their any other fish that are meant for a 50 gallon that will thrive with angels?

Keyholes seem to get along with them when they are in larger tanks. I am having issues with my angels & keyholes being in a 33g together. So my pair are being sold.

will black phantom tetras do well with them if I let them into the tank first so they have a chance to grow? I've seen this method works well with neon, and these guys are bigger than neons

If you are planning on keeping angels, I would be careful about which fish to add with them. There are a lot of fish, but just try to stay away from the 'known' nippers. Rainbow fish do very nicely with them and they do not bother each other, plus the rainbows grow nice and large for your tank. Any of the catfish would do ok as well. A pleco, cory cats, rasbora's as well. Angels like to stay pretty much at the top half of the tank, so any bottom dwellers would work. Tigar barbs can get nasty and some tetras as well, like the serpae tetras. You can try German blue rams, or bolivian rams too. I only have Discus, rainbows, cardinal tetras and two bolivian rams with mine at the moment. Im sure there are a host of other fish you can add as well, and hopefully others will come along with suggestions for you.
Good luck with your tank!

My son has a 55 with 2 breeding angels, 2 breeding spc 3 plecos, 5(or more) cherry barbs) and a couple kuhli loaches. They all live well together. In another tank , 29g, he had a juvenile angel, an adult guppy, a pleco (diff breed) and a swordtail. The swordtail stayed well away from the angel but they were okay in the same tank. Since then, the swordtail has been sold and another juvie angel added. That too is working.

However, the angel fry (from the mom and dad in the 55) were very shortly housed with some purple Moscow guppy goodsized fry. Big mistake. The angels dined well that night. We moved them back to the 10 g fry tank and the surviving guppies are thriving.

Hope that helps.

OK, hows this?

3 Angel fish (Pterophyllum Scalare)
5 Bronze Cories (Corydoras Aeneus)
8 Diamond Tetras (Moenkhausia pittieri)
1 Red Tail Shark (Epalzeorhynchus Bicolor)

OK, i admit it, I stink at stocking tanks. Good for 50 gallons?

Try using a compatibility chart like the one found here.

Hi TFA
I think that your stocking plan sounds good. All those fish should get along fine. The school of 8 diamond tetras will look very nice!
