just wondering

Does anyone know approximately how much money is spent to run filters on fish tanks? Im curious as I hear often, "must be nice to be able to afford just the electricity these things must use"!....and what do I say in return,

I know it depends on the size of the tank..but in a general area, anyone have a clue ?

thanks

I can tell you this Shawnie...My electic bill is at least $30.00 a month on the tanks alone...I live in the Desert so my electric bill in the summer is almost $300.00 a month...

Yes, the salt water tank is expensive to run...I have to keep the lights on all day and it has a very powerful filter...Will also has his 55 gallon which was also a salt water tank at one time so it has great lighting and filtration...My other 3 tanks are small...I don't think they cost me much at all and even if they did I'd still have them...

Trust me, I hear it all the time about how many more tanks can you afford to run...My answer is...As many as I want to lol

well, with us being new to the bigger tanks this year, our electric bill w/ having the new 20l, extra 5, 36g, 55g on top of the 10g, and other 5g its went up about maybe 30ish...

wonder what they will say this summer when everyone gets into the power /
water rationing thing..

Hmm.. I've never sat down & figured out exactly what our tanks cost to run and it's probably better that way.

Hi Shawnie
I also saw our electric bill go up since setting up the tanks. I believe its not only the filter, but the air pumps.. and the hood lights, as well as the heaters. So I guess when we put all that together.. the bill does go up. Our bill is probably at least 30 more a month too. But remember all the electricity went up in cost as well. Its unreal what the monthly elec bill is lately.. uggh!

I'm thinking ours is up 20-30. But if you are bad about leaving on lights, you can make it up by shutting those down. You can take short, cooler showers, bump your thermostat a degree or two. Lots of ways to make it up. Our house has 3 55gallons, 2 29 gals, 1 10 gal, 1 20 gal,and a large frog habitat.

The fish hobby also offsets other expenses, so the minor electric jump isn't a big deal.I was really worried about water, but after setting up tanks and getting them cycles, we don't use that much more and often the bill is the same. Again, recycling can offset that too. We save shower warm up water and water the plants. Shorter showers help here too.
