My mothers tank was gross!

I was shocked when I went to her house yesterday for her b-day. I looked in her tank, and I thought they had forgot to turn on the light to the tank, nope the light was flickering where they didn't replace the bulb in years.... then underneath on the top of the tank was MOLD!! yuck! the shells hadn't been moved inside the tank in so long it had alage all the way to the bottom of the tank (you could tell they hadn't vaccumed it in weeks)... I asked mom what was going on w/ the fish tank, and she said w/ the resturant her and my stepdad just couldn't keep it up, well they have that a 10g, a 5g, a 2.5g, and the baby bettas... the only thing they are taking care of is the baby bettas....

I freaked out! I told her that if she couldn't take care of the fish to drain the water into a bucket (at least half of it) and bring it to my house w/ the fish bagged up and I would take the tank. She made the remark she didn't know what to do w/ the tank or fish along w/ the 10g tank. I said well, another 2 water changes wouldn't kill me.
Her tank is just a 29g w/ angels in it and some guppies. I think its just like 4 angels total...
So I will prob be getting this tank this weekend especially after I got onto her about asking my stepdad 5 times to measure the lightbulb at least so I could give them a bulb (I have a ton of them) to replace it. She also said something about their lionhead rabbit and not being able to take care of him.. I said thats her prob.. I don't do rabbits!

You are so good to take her fish. People who can't take care of their pets should not have them. I understand that people get into situations, but they should take action an give their animals to loving homes before they neglect them. We had to do this with the cocker spaniel puppy that we had. Our work schedule was too much and we weren't home enough, so we gave her to a friend. Even though we miss her, we know that she is much better off. Anyways, congrats on the new tank I know the fish will be very happy with you!

Thanks, honestly this is the first time I have ever seen her tank nasty.. they kept african cichlids before and they were the ones who got me interested in them. My stepdad was the one who introduced me to the easy vaccum methods (using the python instead of that syphon hose and a bucket)... so it really is all about time w/ them. If I had a chance once a week I would go over there myself and clean their tank so they could keep it over there, I might still do that.

I just got my python last week. It is a godsend. Sure I won't get a workout from lifting 15 buckets back and forth outside to the tank, fill up to the tank again but I like python better haha.

Whatever you end up doing, whether it be taking the tank or leaving it there and cleaning it, I hope the fish stay happy and healthy which I am sure they will in your care.

What is in the 10G?
