I went into this fishstore locally, and I needed a light bulb for one of my tanks.... OMG!! I was about to throw up it was so bothering!
First, about 200 goldfish in a 20g tank, brown water.... then you look up on the wall and nailed to it was this cup thing w/ a half dead betta in brown water, they had in a 10g tank oscars, angelfish,parrot fish, african cichlids, and plecos and told customers they can go together in the same water, they were allso selling hellbenders (waterdogs), chinese dragons, they had about 30 cocatiels in a very small cage that stunk to high heaven not cleaned you could tell in days, about 8-10 rabbits in about a 3 by 3 cage very dirty, then guiena pigs in the same conditions.... I could go on!!!

Not counting tatooed fish, dyed fish.....

eels of all kinds and telling customers they go w/ any fish you want to mix them with (I play dumb ol'customer when I go in there)....

It was HORRID people!

I would call your local ASPC and find out what you can do to get them clean up the place or maybe even shut down.

My husbands family has friends on the county commission, and Tuesday morning, since tomm is a holiday I am going to call them and see the laws on licensing in TN for pet stores and then call the people who give the licenses out.. not to mention TWRA for the Hellbenders they are selling, and see if they can also make sure the reptiles they are selling are all legal imports... basicly make sure everything they are doing is legal, not only get them for nasty conditions, but get a hefty fine on them for illegally selling reptiles/and pets that they should not have....

I mean business I left out of there in tears after seeing the animals in those conditions!

Steve and Angela, and imagine ... there are thousands of fish stores like this . I know, it fills me with disbelief and disgust too. If it were in my power, I'd ban and run out of business ALL fish stores like this. What we, regular folks, CAN do, is spread the good knowledge about the proper way to maintain fish tanks and the health of fish. Boycott these stores through spreading the knowlege. If enough people realize how unethical these fish stores are, they'll stop buying from them, and this will - in turn - drive them all out of business. Another alternative are protests in front of such stores and trying to convince the government to pass laws on how fish stores should maintain their tanks and fish. But do you think the government would ever care about "fish"?

You would think the SPCA would have somethng on these LFS's, but apparently they don't. So my plan is, if my back is permanently screwed up, to find the funding and open my own LFS, and like Isa so ellequenty put it, run ALL the ones around here out of business!

That is totally disgusting that an aquatics store would actually do something like that! Plus they are mistreating Amphibians? and Birds? and Rodents That is totally unacceptable. I hope they get shut down.

I mean, I work at PetSmart, and the training and work that goes into making sure that all of the animals are well cared for and appropriatly fed and maintained and interacted with is priority number one in our Pet Care department. But then again, this just how much pride my store happens to take in making sure that our animals are well cared for. I mean, come one, I know it is a bit of work, that can be not only tedious, but sometimes, smelly, but, dudes and dudettes, if one keeps on top of it, it ain't really, and shouldn't ever be that big of a deal. Sheesh... Well I hope things work out for the better... - Peace.

I think that one thing that will help is they dont' just keep fish, but they dabble into other animals that the animal rights people get worked up about..
not to metion there are a few questionable reptiles that I saw.. that I don't think was legal to have in the US... and they are dumb enough to sell them.

Sounds like a place near here that was stupid enough to put a blue lobster in with some Farluwella Cats. I was livid when I saw all the farluwella's tails had been already nipped off, and half were going to die no matter what at that point. I lost it & really went off on the owner, who apparently "Didn't know his employee did that".

Yea, I'd want to shut that place down! Those are conditions that make the chain stores look good!
